Martin Brundle says sorry to Brian May following a tense moment on the grid walk at the British GP.
Martin Brundle has apologized to iconic Queen guitarist Brian May after an uncomfortable encounter during the F1 grid walk at the British Grand Prix on Sunday.
Brundle tried to talk to May, who was attending Silverstone as a Mercedes guest.
As he got closer to May, Brundle asked during his grid walk, "Brian, would you like to have a conversation with Sky?"
May declined, prompting Brundle to respond, “No knowledge required. It's great to see you on the grid, thank you.”
Speaking to the audience, he stated, "Our intention is not to complicate matters for him. He admitted to lacking sufficient knowledge about F1, which I understand and respect. He doesn't want to act as if he's well-informed when he's not, and that's perfectly acceptable."
May discussed the matter in a blog post on his website.
May expressed that her time at Silverstone was wonderful, largely due to the generosity of the Mercedes team, and highlighted that her grandson experienced some memorable moments on his birthday.
"Also, I'd like to apologize to Mr. Brundle. There was no intention to ignore you. What you witnessed was simply a person who felt uneasy discussing a topic they didn't know much about and was in a hurry to reach their destination."
Soon after, Brundle issued an apology on social media.
He posted on his X account: "I am the one who owes Sir Brian May an apology, not the other way around, for the gridwalk incident on Sunday at Silverstone."
"I failed to call him Sir Brian and made the mistake of trying to engage him in conversation twice despite his clear reluctance on live television. No one is ever required to speak with me on the grid or in any other setting."
