Mercedes’ Remarkable Resurgence: Toto Wolff Celebrates British GP Pole and Sets High Hopes for Upcoming Upgrades
Toto Wolff praises British GP pole as "well-deserved" | "Big hopes" for upcoming upgrades
Toto Wolff expressed his happiness that Mercedes clinched the pole position for the British Grand Prix "fairly".
Toto Wolff celebrated Mercedes achieving the top two spots in Formula 1 qualifying for the British Grand Prix, describing the outcome as “amazing” and emphasizing that his team earned the pole position “fairly” at Silverstone.
Mercedes achieved their first front-row sweep since the 2022 Sao Paulo Grand Prix, with George Russell taking pole position and Lewis Hamilton coming in second.
The squad demonstrated impressive speed in rainy conditions this weekend, but their performance in dry weather remained uncertain.
Looking back on Mercedes securing the pole position at Silverstone, Wolff shared with Sky Sports, “It feels amazing. You talk about the race victor from Austria, and now we’ve got both front-row positions locked in.”
"Who could have imagined this just a few months back? Perhaps we are also considering the idea of karma."
"You shouldn't become overconfident just because you've made a good start, and the same applies for tomorrow."
Wolff admitted that Mercedes was expecting rainy conditions after showing strong performance in the third practice session.
"We were optimistic about wet conditions after performing well in FP3, and it was encouraging to see that,” he mentioned. “I believe the weather works in our favor. It’s typical British weather, and we hope it stays that way for the rest of the summer, no matter where we are.
"In the end, I’m glad we managed to achieve this with integrity and based on merit, but we shouldn’t celebrate prematurely."
Mercedes have experienced a significant comeback in recent races following a disappointing beginning to the year.
Until their appearance in Canada last month, Mercedes had not secured a podium finish, marking their poorest season start in more than ten years.
Wolff disclosed that Mercedes has identified a definite “path” for the development of their car, hinting at upcoming upgrades to be unveiled in Hungary and Belgium.
"It's thrilling," he commented. "Over the past two years, we've faced challenges in finding our way. We would have a successful weekend followed by a disappointing one, which was confusing. Before Imola, we finally found our direction. Imola was the first time the car performed as we anticipated, even though we were not yet up to speed. Each weekend, we've managed to add new components to the car and understand its behavior."
"We plan to persist with our current course of action. We hold lofty expectations for all the developments set to be implemented on the car in Budapest and Spa."
