Mercedes-Benz Gears Up for Electrification with Visionary Supercar Set to Succeed SLS AMG Electric Drive

It's been said that Mercedes-Benz's high-performance branch, AMG, is in the works of developing an electric supercar which might be the next in line after the SLS AMG Electric Drive, according to Autocar.

Introduced at the Paris motor show in 2012, the SLS AMG Electric Drive emerged as a limited edition variant of the conventional fuel-powered SLS AMG sports vehicle. This model swapped the typical 6.2-liter V-8 for a quartet of electric motors, delivering a total of 740 horsepower and 737 pound-feet of torque—significantly surpassing the output of the standard gasoline model.

Despite boasting remarkable features, the SLS AMG Electric Drive was essentially a preliminary test in electric car development rather than a finished offering. Mercedes initially intended to manufacture 100 of these vehicles, yet merely nine ended up being made, as indicated by a 2021 RM Sotheby's listing for one of these rare vehicles.

The SLS model, whether it ran on petrol or electricity, boasted the distinctive upward-opening doors reminiscent of the iconic 1950s Mercedes-Benz 300 SL. Autocar suggests that the latest electric high-performance vehicle might delve deeper into the nostalgic design, potentially drawing aesthetic cues from the Vision One-Eleven, an electric vehicle concept presented in 2023 that serves as a contemporary homage to the experimental Mercedes-Benz C111 series from the 1970s.

The Vision One Eleven was a platform to display the innovative axial-flux motors from Yasa, a British firm that became part of Mercedes in 2021. It's expected that these motors will also power the upcoming supercar, reports Autocar, though the details on the setup and power remain uncertain. Yasa has mentioned before that a single motor has the capability to produce 489 horsepower.

According to Autocar, the high-performance vehicle is expected to incorporate tubular battery cells featuring silicon-anode technology provided by American company Sila. With Mercedes as one of its backers, Sila has boasted of achieving a 20% increase in driving range with its silicon anodes by 2023. Mercedes has already announced intentions to implement Sila's advanced silicon anodes in a future variant of the electric G-Class SUV, which will offer extended range and is set to launch later in the 2020s.

According to the report, the high-performance vehicle is set to be built on a newly developed modular electric vehicle platform known as AMG.EA. This platform will first be introduced with the electric successor to the current AMG GT 4-Door. Drawing inspiration from the Vision AMG concept showcased in 2022, the anticipated launch of this four-door model is slated for 2025 or beyond.

AMG has previously enhanced existing Mercedes electric vehicles with greater power. However, creating a fully electric supercar will demonstrate the brand's ability to excel in the electric performance vehicle sector, despite its background in traditional gas-powered engines.
