Max Verstappen Leads Wet Belgian Practice as Lance Stroll Crashes at Eau Rouge
Max Verstappen leads the final practice session in rainy conditions in Belgium, while Lance Stroll experiences a significant crash at Eau Rouge.
Max Verstappen led the way in the shortened and rain-disrupted last practice session at the Belgian Grand Prix, while Lance Stroll had an accident.
The Red Bull racer ended up 1.4 seconds ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in the rainy weather, with Pierre Gasly from Alpine coming in third, trailing by 1.6 seconds.
Current world champion Verstappen will start Sunday's race 10 places lower on the grid due to surpassing his season's power unit limit.
The lap times were not very indicative, as drivers were just beginning to understand the track conditions before the session was halted due to Stroll's major crash at Eau Rouge.
The Aston Martin driver lost control of the rear of his vehicle while navigating through the corner, causing him to spin and collide with the inner barrier.
Stroll's vehicle incurred substantial damage to its front left side, but the Canadian driver emerged unscathed from the incident, which resulted in the red flags being displayed.
The weather took a turn for the worse at Spa-Francorchamps as heavier rain began to fall during the red flag period. The session resumed for a short time under green flags, but was soon halted again when conditions deteriorated even more.
Lando Norris secured fourth place, followed by Esteban Ocon in the second Alpine and Charles Leclerc from Ferrari.
Lance Stroll recorded the seventh-quickest lap prior to his crash, while Valtteri Bottas secured the eighth position for Sauber, followed by Lewis Hamilton in his Mercedes and Sergio Perez driving for Red Bull.
Daniel Ricciardo from RB headed back to the pit after completing four laps, citing an issue with his steering wheel.
