Maverick Vinales Sets Sights on Victory After Record-Breaking Performance at Sachsenring
Maverick Vinales reveals his strategy for winning after a strong performance on Friday
Maverick Vinales: “If the race were today, we would be contenders for the lead. That's our goal.”
Maverick Vinales is optimistic about improved weather conditions as the German MotoGP weekend progresses. However, even if the weather remains cool, the Aprilia rider believes he can still compete with Ducati.
Vinales secured the leading position during the second practice session at Sachsenring, breaking the lap record and creating a three-tenths of a second gap between himself and the other competitors.
Recalling the earlier part of the season at COTA, Vinales once more showcased his excellent performance by fending off Ducati’s competition.
"It was a solid lap," Vinales commented later. "I pushed to the maximum at every point on the track. It was a successful Friday. The conditions were challenging and hard to gauge, particularly due to the wind and the cold."
"While completing the lap, the temperature fell suddenly. However, we were able to maintain a good sense of control in all types of weather, and I made sure to get ready properly for the long race."
"Tomorrow morning, our attention will be on the sprint race. Later, during qualifying, you aim for a flawless lap with unwavering focus."
Vinales led the second practice session, finishing 0.340 seconds faster than Jorge Martin. However, Marc Marquez might have posed a significant threat if he hadn't experienced a severe highside crash, which resulted in him needing medical attention towards the end of the session.
Despite the typical challenges for the Aprilia in such conditions, Vinales demonstrated impressive speed, boosting his confidence for Sunday's race.
Vinales stated, “Earlier this year, I pointed out that the bike occasionally feels different than it did last year. I believe the bike now performs more consistently across all tracks, which helps in gaining confidence and maintaining steady performance.”
"I accelerated heavily, feeling the urge to drift smoothly through the turn and maintain a controlled slide as I approached the corner."
"At the Sachsenring, this is crucial. I'm still not performing well in the first section. I'm having difficulty bringing the bike to a stop, so we'll need to find a few tenths of a second tomorrow."
“We must be prepared. Increased temperatures will lead to better traction, which is beneficial.
"Once I get a better grip, it becomes simpler for me to achieve a good lap time. I hope for favorable grip conditions tomorrow."
"If the weather is cold on Sunday, we have already gathered the necessary data. If the race were held today, we would be able to compete at the front. That is our goal."
