Maverick Vinales on Ducati Dominance: ‘They Do Something Different for Saturday and Sunday
Maverick Vinales: Ducatis have a special performance on weekends
Maverick Vinales: 'The Ducatis show a different level of strength on Saturdays and Sundays'
Maverick Vinales made his way back to the MotoGP Sprint podium for the first time since the Le Mans race, securing a spot behind Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, both riding Ducatis, at the Assen circuit.
Beginning the race from the front row, Vinales importantly surrendered a position to Alex Marquez during the first lap.
By the second lap, the Aprilia was back in third place, trailing only Bagnaia and Martin. However, the slipstream was no longer effective, causing the rider to steadily fall behind the leading Desmosedicis.
Vinales expressed contentment but also a desire to compete for the win, finishing 4.103 seconds after Bagnaia.
"Like I said yesterday, they perform better on Saturday compared to Sunday because they are much stronger today. While we have also improved, it's still not sufficient."
“We should be happy because I believe we got the most out of the bike today. We finished in third place. But we’ll keep pushing forward. I believe we have another excellent chance tomorrow.”
“I’m hoping that everyone uses the medium tire since I feel a lot more competitive with them.”
The Spanish rider, who is taking part in his initial competition after securing a contract with Tech3 KTM for the next season, believes that a more powerful beginning will be vital for Sunday.
"I have to catch the slipstream. When I'm by myself, I can't hit the top speed and I lose a tenth of a second because of that," Vinales explained. "That affects my performance throughout the entire track."
"I need to position myself behind Pecco or Jorge to utilize their slipstream. That way, I believe I'll be more competitive."
Both team member Aleix Espargaro and wild-card racer Lorenzo Savadori were hospitalized for examinations following distinct crashes during the Sprint.
