Jenson Button Sounds Alarm on Sergio Perez’s Struggles: Red Bull’s Championship Hopes at Risk
Jenson Button cautions Red Bull regarding Sergio Perez: "They can't allow this situation to continue indefinitely."
"If he fails to score points in the next race as well?"
According to 2009 F1 world champion Jenson Button, Red Bull will be compelled to find a replacement for Sergio Perez if he doesn't improve his performance.
Perez has only managed to earn points in two of the last five races, marking a significant decline in his performance.
The Mexican driver faced difficulties again at Silverstone, being eliminated in the first qualifying session and ultimately ending the race far from the top ten, even getting lapped twice.
Perez's recent performance issues put Red Bull's lead in the constructors' championship at risk.
As McLaren consistently wins races and boasts two drivers who can earn significant points, Red Bull's lead may be jeopardized in the latter part of the year.
During the British Grand Prix weekend, while speaking on Sky Sports' Formula 1 coverage, Button referred to Perez's performances as a "significant problem."
"It's a huge problem," he stated. "This weekend was awful. In some respects, it was a stroke of bad luck. This kind of event won't occur every weekend."
"McLaren scoring that many points is significant. Although Mercedes had reliability issues and didn't have both cars finish, if they had, it would have also substantially reduced Red Bull's lead."
"They're currently at a disadvantage, ranking as the third-highest scoring team in the recent five or six races. He should be earning some points, at the very least, even if he isn't finishing right behind Max."
Jenson Button, who teamed up with Sergio Perez at McLaren back in 2013, thinks that Red Bull might need to find a new driver if Perez keeps failing to score points in the next two races before the summer break.
"They can't continue this indefinitely. If he fails to score points in the next race as well, they will eventually need to replace him with another driver," he remarked.
"It's difficult. I understand that it's an awful experience for a driver, it's terrible. However, the constructors' championship holds significant importance for them."
Red Bull awarded Perez a fresh two-year contract just before the Canadian Grand Prix, despite his recent difficulties in the last two races, which made the decision unexpected.
New information has surfaced indicating that Perez's contract contains several performance-related clauses that give Red Bull the option to replace him if necessary.
Ex-W Series racer Naomi Schiff is puzzled that Perez’s new deal, which guarantees his spot with the team until 2026, didn’t give him a confidence boost.
She elaborated that the increased competitiveness and the reduced dominance of Red Bull compared to previous seasons are key factors. Max has been pushing the car beyond its limits, while Checo has not managed to achieve this.
"Last year, we observed the same behavior. What puzzles me is why extending his contract hasn't boosted his confidence. Previously, it seemed like he was pushing too hard to demonstrate his worth. He shouldn't feel the need to do that now."
"Performance clauses will definitely be included. The choice to retain him should have boosted his confidence, but instead, it seems to have had a negative impact."
