Francesco Bagnaia outperforms championship frontrunner Jorge Martin, securing his third consecutive win at the Dutch MotoGP, and matches Casey Stoner's record with 23 victories on a Ducati.
After cutting Martin's lead in the title race to just 15 points with a win from pole position in the Saturday Sprint, Bagnaia once again looked set to take control after securing the top spot early in the grand prix.
Martin quickly recovered from his grid penalty, ascending to second place by the conclusion of the first lap, and then traded quickest laps with Bagnaia, distancing themselves from Marc Marquez.
Martin managed to reduce Bagnaia's advantage to less than a second multiple times, yet the leading Ducati rider's exceptional speed ultimately became too much to handle.
With 12 laps remaining, Bagnaia extended his lead to 1.5 seconds and ultimately clinched the victory by a margin of 3.7 seconds.
The competition for the last spot on the podium heated up, with warm-up frontrunner Fabio di Giannantonio, Sprint race podium placer Maverick Vinales, and newcomer sensation Pedro Acosta quickly lining up behind Marc Marquez.
On the eighth lap, Marquez seemed to signal di Giannantonio to overtake him, possibly concerned that his tyre pressure might drop below the required minimum if he didn't.
In any case, the Gresini competitor immediately resumed his position just behind di Giannantonio, while Enea Bastianini, known for his characteristic late surge, joined the fray to make it a contest among five riders for the podium spots.
The pack stayed unchanged until Diggia unexpectedly veered off course. This led to a reordering that placed Vinales in the lead of the pack in third position, as Bastianini pushed Marquez off the racing line at the first turn.
Bastianini quickly started pressuring his soon-to-be Tech3 colleague Vinales, executing a move for the podium at Turn 1 when there were just 4 laps remaining.
Vinales lost his position at the second-to-last turn, allowing Marquez to overtake him for fourth place… subsequently, he was penalized with a one-position drop for going beyond the boundaries of the track on the last lap, which moved him back behind di Giannantonio into sixth place.
Acosta experienced disappointment towards the end as he fell from seventh place due to a crash on the last lap.
During the extended race, the majority of the competitors transitioned from favoring the soft rear tire, which was popular in the Sprint, to opting for the medium rear
As the temperature dropped, several riders, among them Martin, switched from the hard to the medium front tire, whereas Acosta quickly advanced using the soft rear tire.
Alex Rins experienced a significant highside crash when he veered off course at the first turn of the race.
Last year's second-place finisher, Marco Bezzecchi, lost control and went off the track on the fourth lap, while Joan Mir also failed to finish, retiring on the seventh lap.
Miguel Oliveira was penalized with a long lap for exceeding track boundaries, only to repeat the penalty due to an error in execution.
Martin incurred a three-position grid penalty for "slowing down and impeding rider #25 [Raul Fernandez]" during the second qualifying session, resulting in the championship front-runner being demoted to fifth position on the starting grid.
This resulted in a new starting grid with Bagnaia, Vinales, and Alex Marquez leading the pack.
In light of Aleix Espargaro's withdrawal from the fourth-place qualification due to a hand injury sustained the previous day, di Giannantonio was moved up to lead the second row.
Marc Marquez, who suffered a fall during the second lap of the Sprint, started from the sixth position.
Wild-card rider Lorenzo Savadori from Aprilia was unable to compete in the race due to sustaining back injuries during the Sprint.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar, a reduction from the previous 1.88 bar, for 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the prior requirement of 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint event.
If a driver does not achieve this minimum requirement in a Grand Prix, they will be subject to a 16-second penalty added to their race time after the event concludes, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or shorter race.
The MotoGP event in Germany, held at Sachsenring, kicks off on Friday, marking the last race before the summer hiatus.
