Marquez Penalized for Low Tyre Pressure at Dutch MotoGP, Drops to Tenth Place
Marc Marquez Incurs Penalty for Low Tyre Pressure After Dutch MotoGP
Marc Marquez was penalized for having low tyre pressure after the race at the Dutch MotoGP, resulting in the loss of his fourth-place finish.
Marc Marquez was demoted from fourth position in the Dutch MotoGP following a penalty imposed after the race for not maintaining the required tyre pressure.
Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin quickly pulled ahead, leading Marquez to gesture for Fabio di Giannantonio to overtake him and spearhead a pack vying for the third position during the 8th lap out of the total 26.
It's believed that Marquez's behavior was likely influenced by concerns that he would face significant pressure if he didn't spend most of the race trailing behind another competitor.
Updated regulations for tire pressure in 2024 require participants to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tires for at least 60% of the race distance in a Grand Prix, failing which they will incur a penalty of 16 seconds added to their race time after the event
Although Marquez stayed in contention for a podium finish until the final laps of the grand prix, he did not complete the required number of 'official' laps.
There's speculation that Marquez and Gresini considered suggesting that Enea Bastianini's maneuver to overtake on the inside at turn one, forcing Marquez to adjust his position and veer off course on the 21st lap, played a role in Marquez not meeting the 60% minimum requirement.
Several participants mentioned that during the Grand Prix, the wind led to an unforeseen drop in tyre warmth, occurring in conditions where the air was 3 degrees cooler than during the Saturday Sprint, and the track temperature was 10 degrees less.
In the end, it was determined that Marquez had been using a front tyre pressure that was 'below the guidelines provided by the official supplier.' Consequently, the FIM Stewards imposed the customary 16-second penalty.
The sanction demotes Marquez from fourth place down to tenth in the Assen rankings, consequently stripping him of 7 points in the global championship tally.
