Marquez Battles Through Injury: Finger Fracture Secondary to Rib Pain After Highside at Sachsenring
Marc Marquez "more troubled by rib injury than finger fracture"
Following a highside incident at Sachsenring, Marc Marquez has been found to have a fracture in his left index finger and a significant bruise on his ribs.
Eleven-time champion at the Sachsenring, Marc Marquez, experienced a dramatic Friday during the German MotoGP.
The Gresini Ducati rider faced mechanical problems, experienced two crashes, and needed medical attention, yet initially led the timesheets before ultimately being knocked out of the top ten and relegated to Qualifying 1.
Following a minor slide (shown in the image) while trailing Jorge Martin to second place during the morning practice, Marquez was thrown from his GP23 at the daunting Turn 11 early in the afternoon session.
In the cool weather, Marquez was one of many riders who experienced the front wheel slipping while navigating a few right-hand turns. This caused the rear wheel of his bike to grip suddenly, launching him into a highside crash at 190 km/h.
Following a delay caused by warning signs related to Fabio di Giannantonio's crash at Turn 1, Marquez seized the opportunity to come back when the session resumed and quickly placed his Desmosedici at the top of the leaderboard.
However, he then made a pit stop and proceeded to the Medical Centre to have his ribs examined due to the previous collision.
Marquez did not come back, but his previous lap time seemed sufficient to guarantee direct access to Qualifying 2, until he was bumped down to 13th place in the closing minutes.
Reports surfaced later indicating that Marquez had sustained a fracture in his left index finger and a significant bruise on his ribcage.
Marquez mentioned that while he felt comfortable on the bike, the crash in the afternoon significantly affected his first day at the Sachsenring.
"I'm not concerned about the break in my finger, but it's the bruise on my rib cage that's really troubling me and it also stopped me from finishing the session."
The eight-time world champion has been cleared to compete tomorrow, though the Spaniard hinted that it's still uncertain: "Now it's time to rest, and we'll assess my physical condition in the morning."
On Friday, Marco Bezzecchi and Enea Bastianini experienced severe crashes at the Turn 11 Ralf Waldmann (Waterfall) corner.
Ten motorcyclists crashed in the afternoon, with all incidents occurring on right-hand turns.
Some people believe that the increased traction provided by the 2024 Michelin rear tire caused the front end to lose grip in the chilly and breezy weather.
In the meantime, Alex Marquez, who is both a brother and team member, had a strong opening day on the track after securing a fresh contract with Gresini.
"It's been a good day overall, despite the uncooperative wind and challenging conditions," Alex remarked. "We experimented with various configurations and discovered some promising options."
"Despite making numerous changes, we didn't lose our rhythm. We've made progress since Assen and are now in a position to compete for a spot in the first two rows tomorrow."
"We need to improve our race speed, but we're heading the right way."
Saturday's forecast predicts a significant increase in temperatures, accompanied by a potential threat of thunderstorms.
