Marc Marquez’s Ultimate Test: Aiming to Break Nearly 1,000-Day MotoGP Losing Streak at Favored Sachsenring
Is Marc Marquez poised to break his almost 1,000-day winless streak in MotoGP at the Sachsenring, a circuit he dominates?
The spotlight is on Marc Marquez as he aims for his inaugural Ducati win on a Sachsenring circuit where he remains undefeated in any top-tier grand prix.
The upcoming Sachsenring race this weekend presents a prime opportunity for Marc Marquez to break his streak of losses in MotoGP.
Marc Marquez maintained a flawless record on the German track in various classes including 125cc, Moto2, and MotoGP between 2010 and 2019. Following an arm surgery, he triumphed once again at this circuit in 2021, marking his first win after his
After missing the 2022 season due to additional surgery, his disappointing comeback last year likely marked the conclusion of his tenure with Honda. This was highlighted by an offensive gesture towards the RC213V during practice, leading into a weekend filled with crashes that ultimately disqualified him from the grand prix.
At the age of 31, he's making a comeback after turning his luck around with Gresini Ducati this year, yet his winless run in MotoGP since Misano 2021 is still ongoing.
Marquez is aiming to break a 987-day winless streak on Sunday, coming in just under half a second behind the first Ducati to cross the finish line at both Jerez and Le Mans.
Despite never actually losing a MotoGP race at the Sachsenring because of races he didn't start, Marquez is up against tough competition with Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin as his rivals.
The championship frontrunners are competing with the newest GP24, in contrast to Marquez's preceding model, the GP23. Bagnaia enters the competition with an impressive streak of five consecutive victories, while Martin previously secured two wins at Sachsenring in the last season.
"Jordan Moreland, the host of the Crash.net MotoGP podcast, expressed his admiration for the circuit, noting the rider's impressive record of 11 race victories, including 8 in the MotoGP class. However, he pointed out that the previous year marked a downturn in the rider's career with Honda, highlighted by five crashes."
"Now that he's riding the Ducati, there are high expectations for him to secure a victory this weekend. However, the competition from the GP24s, particularly Bagnaia and Martin, won't allow for an easy win."
"Absolutely not," responded Pete McLaren, the MotoGP editor for Crash.net. "During the era when Marquez was with Honda, there were moments you could nearly hand him the victory trophy before the weekend even kicked off. However, this time, it's not going to be the same.
Given his performance at other circuits, it's logical to anticipate he'll contend for the win, so we're eager to witness a genuine contest among the world championship's top three competitors.
Marc also requires this, as he's been losing ground to Martin and Pecco in the standings. It's crucial for him to make a comeback before the summer hiatus.
Everyone is aiming to enter the break feeling optimistic, yet it seems Marc might have the leeway to take greater chances compared to the other two. Given the slim 10-point gap between Martin and Pecco at this moment, they might opt for a more cautious approach should the competition intensify during the race.
"Neither will be eager to discard it since, for Martin, there's the risk of forfeiting the lead in the championship. On the other hand, for Bagnaia, it could mean negating all the effort put into narrowing the gap to the front."
"However, I believe Marc should really seize the opportunity at this circuit where he's traditionally excelled, except for the previous year!"
"Moreland mentioned that Marc had thought about hanging up his helmet around this time last year during Assen. However, he's now set to join Ducati's factory team in 2025," stated Moreland.
"Turning our attention to this weekend, however, is the expectation of increased pressure on Marquez due to his previous performances at the Sachsenring, or will it be on Bagnaia and Martin to halt his progress?"
Motorcycle racing journalist Robert Jones commented, “Given how closely matched Bagnaia and Martin are at the moment, they might be keeping a close watch on one another. However, Marc is also under a significant amount of stress, partly because there were high expectations for him to secure a victory on a Ducati, which he has yet to achieve.
Jerez had an excellent opportunity but fell short against Bagnaia in the grand prix and experienced a crash during the Sprint, where he was in the lead at the time.
"Marc, distinctly more so than his competitors, also aims to convey a strong signal to the other racers, ensuring Bagnaia and Martin don't settle into a sense of security, believing they have him outclassed."
"And Marc will be determined not to let them outdo him on what's considered 'his' track.
"He's likely to feel more at ease, given his position in the rankings, allowing him to gamble a bit more. However, the expectation to secure a victory will undoubtedly continue to weigh heavily on him."
Moreland commented, “Following Assen, Bagnaia was modest about his prospects, suggesting Marquez and Martin would bring something special to Sachsenring. However, I'm not convinced! I'm sure Pecco will be in the mix too.”
"McLaren mentioned that after leaving a circuit that favored Pecco, they are now at a venue where Marquez boasts an unparalleled track record and where Martin emerged victorious last year. He highlighted that it's up to these athletes to challenge Pecco and apply pressure on him at a circuit where they traditionally excel."
"It's difficult to imagine that Pecco won't be among the frontrunners this weekend, considering the impressive performance he's currently demonstrating. We're hopeful that they'll all be closely competing.
"Additionally, this presents the final opportunity for Acosta to surpass Marquez by becoming the youngest ever winner of a MotoGP race."
