Marc Marquez’s Moto2 Nemesis Andrea Iannone Eyes MotoGP Return: The Rivalry Rekindled?
Unveiled: "The sole competitor in Moto2 that intimidated Marc Marquez"
"I'd like to recall a particular insight Marquez shared with me some time back…"
The sole competitor who intimidated Marc Marquez in Moto2 might join him on the MotoGP lineup for the upcoming season.
Davide Tardozzi has identified Andrea Iannone as the racer who instilled fear in the emerging superstar.
Iannone, who has since joined Ducati in the World Superbikes following the conclusion of his four-year suspension for doping, is exploring his possibilities for the year 2025.
"Given his age, Andrea is expected to perform strongly in WSBK," stated Ducati's team manager Tardozzi to GPOne.
"Undoubtedly, he has MotoGP on his mind, but it seems challenging for him to make it there."
"Nonetheless, he possesses an innate skill, and I recall a piece of advice Marquez shared with me some time back."
Iannone was the sole competitor in Moto2 that Marc regarded with apprehension.
"Andrea merited the esteem befitting an eight-time global champion."
In 2012, during the Moto2 championship, Marquez clinched the title while Pol Espargaro secured the runner-up position and Iannone came in third in the standings.
A year before, Marquez finished second to Stefan Bradl, with Iannone taking third place once more.
Years down the line, following Marquez's dominance in MotoGP and his current pursuit of an additional championship with Ducati, Iannone is similarly undergoing a resurgence.
The overlooked racer in motorcycle competition has made a notable impact in the initial stages of the WSBK season with Go Eleven Ducati.
Tardozzi acknowledges that the Pramac MotoGP squad is one of the parties interested in him for the upcoming season.
"Tardozzi mentioned that Paolo Campinoti holds him in high regard."
"In my opinion, the task is quite challenging for a number of reasons."
"Andrea has been performing impressively in the World Superbike Championship, though moving up to MotoGP represents a significant leap. It's uncertain whether, after so many years, he's still capable of adapting to it."
"Additionally, the approach to cycling has evolved, coinciding with changes in the features of bicycles."
Iannone might consider the option of taking over the factory Ducati WSBK motorcycle should Alvaro Bautista decide to leave.
