Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph Sparks Hope, Yet Championship Title Remains Distant
Marc Marquez’s hopes for the championship are still subdued even after his win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, an eight-time World Champion, secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his gap in the championship standings to 70 points. Despite this achievement, he believes he is still not close enough to be seen as a serious title challenger.
Marquez is trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points and is also 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who has achieved the most success in 2024 with seven Grand Prix wins and three Sprint race victories.
In the post-race press conference at Aragon, Marquez acknowledged the considerable gap in his championship standings. "No, we are far," he confessed when questioned about his title prospects. "We continue to lose points, increasingly more. We are just too far behind."
"And it's not just one competitor; there are actually two who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. Sure, it will be beneficial, but it won't make a significant difference. We're too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, aiming for a spot in the top three is a feasible objective. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could unfold, particularly since the weather in Asia can be quite unpredictable with storms and rain."
"However, the most crucial aspect for me is that we continue to have fun, and we will strive to compete with the leading contenders."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon race.
"The weekend has been fantastic, and the atmosphere was incredible," he remarked. "However, we have to stay grounded because the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I found the Red Bull Ring GP more significant as I felt great there and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"The significance of this win is exceptionally high, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We must grasp this during the races, though I am aware that there will be weekends that are more challenging than others. This consistency will be the next crucial factor."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's performance as an illustration, noting that despite being considered a serious contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini only managed to finish fifth in Aragon after starting 14th in the qualifying round.
Marquez stated, "Our goal is to replicate our success in the future. We can have a quick performance on certain weekends, like Enea Bastianini did in Silverstone, but achieving consistency is what I aim to focus on, as it's the hardest aspect to attain."
Jorge Martin, who is currently leading the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, partially concurred with Marquez’s views.
The championship leader remarked that although Marc is currently at a distance, he could become a contender for the title if he begins to win all the race weekends.
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the title, then he fell out of the race, and now it's Marc's turn. After his strong performances in Austria and here, it's clear that he's one of the top riders and definitely has a shot at the championship."
