Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph: A Victory Too Late for 2024 Championship Hopes
Marc Marquez's title hopes remain distant despite his Aragon MotoGP triumph.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP, cutting his points gap in the championship to 70. However, he believes he is still not close enough to be seen as a title contender.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who holds the record for the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race wins.
During the post-race press conference at Aragon, Marquez acknowledged, "No, we're not close," when questioned about his chances for the championship. "We're starting to lose more and more points. We're too far behind."
"It's not just one competitor; there are actually two who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly be beneficial, but it won't be a game-changer. We're currently too distant from contending for the championship this year."
"However, let's aim to secure a spot in the top three. That's a feasible objective. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could unfold, especially considering the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, with storms and rain being common."
"However, the most crucial aspect for me is that we continue having fun, and we will strive to persist and compete with the leading players."
Stressing the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez highlighted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon race.
"This weekend has been exceptionally great, and the atmosphere has been fantastic," he remarked. "However, we have to stay realistic; the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I think the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix was more significant because I felt really good and was competing at a level very close to the top contenders."
"The significance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to grasp this during races, although I'm aware there will be weekends where we'll face more challenges compared to others. Consistency will be the next crucial element."
Marquez highlighted the case of Enea Bastianini, who was considered a strong contender for the championship following his two wins at the British Grand Prix. However, after starting 14th in the qualifiers, he ended up finishing fifth in the Aragon race.
Marquez mentioned that they aim to replicate their performance in the future, noting that while they can be quick for a weekend—like Enea Bastianini was in Silverstone—achieving consistency is the main challenge they need to address.
Jorge Martin, who is now leading the championship by 23 points after the Aragon event, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship frontrunner mentioned, "Marc is currently quite distant, but if he manages to win every race weekend, he could become a contender for the title."
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the title. He fell out of the running, but now Marc is showing his strength again, especially after Austria and this race. Undoubtedly, he's one of the top riders on the grid and a serious championship competitor."
