Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph: A Victory Overshadowed by Championship Realities
Marc Marquez "too distant to contend for the title" even after Aragon MotoGP triumph
Even though Marc Marquez secured a win at the Aragon MotoGP, his hopes for the championship are still restrained.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his gap in the championship standings to 70 points. Despite this progress, he believes he remains too distant to be seen as a title challenger at present.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points back from Francesco Bagnaia, who leads the 2024 season with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race wins.
At the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez conceded that they are not close to contending for the championship. "No, we are far," he acknowledged when questioned about their chances. "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
"There are actually two riders who are more consistent than we are, not just one."
"One weekend won't alter our overall situation. It can certainly benefit us, but it won't bring about a significant change. We're currently too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to secure a spot in the top three. This is an achievable target. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could occur, especially considering the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, with storms and rain being common."
"However, our enjoyment remains, which is crucial to me, and we will strive to continue competing with the leading players."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the unique circumstances of the Aragon event.
"This weekend was incredible; the atmosphere was fantastic," he remarked. "However, we must be realistic because the conditions were quite unique. Personally, the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix held more significance for me, as I felt really great and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"The importance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to grasp this during the races, although I am aware there will be weekends where we face more challenges than usual. Consistency will be our second crucial focus."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's case, noting that despite being considered a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished in fifth place at Aragon after starting from 14th position in the qualifiers.
Marquez stated that they aim to replicate their performance in the future, though speed can vary from weekend to weekend—like how Enea Bastianini was quick at Silverstone. However, Marquez emphasized that his primary focus is on achieving consistency, which he acknowledged as the most challenging aspect.
Jorge Martin, who holds a 23-point lead in the championship standings following the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader mentioned that although Marc is currently trailing, he could become a contender for the title if he begins winning every race weekend.
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was still in contention for the title, then he fell out of the race. Now, Marc has emerged strong after Austria and this race. Undoubtedly, he is one of the top riders on the circuit and is capable of competing for the championship."
