Marc Marquez’s Aragon Triumph: A Glimmer of Hope Amidst Title Doubts
Marc Marquez's championship hopes remain dim despite his win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, the eight-time World Champion, achieved a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his championship points gap to 70. Despite this progress, he believes he remains too far behind to be seen as a serious title contender.
Aside from trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who has the most wins in 2024 with seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint triumphs.
During the post-race press conference at Aragon, Marquez acknowledged that his chances for the championship were slim. "No, we are far," he said when questioned about his position in the standings. "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
“There are actually two riders who are more consistent than we are, not just one.”
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It can certainly benefit us, but it won't make a drastic change. We're too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to compete for a place among the top three. That seems achievable. There are still many points up for grabs and many events to unfold, especially since the weather in Asia can be unpredictable with storms and rain."
“We continue to have fun, and that’s what matters most to me. We will strive to keep competing with the best.”
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the unique circumstances of the Aragon race.
"The weekend was fantastic, and the atmosphere was incredible," he commented. "However, we must stay grounded as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, the Red Bull Ring GP held more significance for me because I felt great and was performing nearly on par with the leading competitors."
"The importance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. It's crucial to grasp this during races, although I am aware that there will be some weekends that are more challenging than others. Achieving consistency will be the next critical factor."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini as an example, noting that despite being considered a strong contender for the championship following his double win at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished fifth in Aragon after starting from 14th on the grid.
Marquez stated, "We aim to replicate our performance in upcoming events. While we have shown speed on certain weekends—like Enea Bastianini did at Silverstone—my focus is on achieving consistency, which is the hardest aspect to master."
After the Aragon race, Jorge Martin, who now holds a 23-point lead in the championship, partially concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader mentioned that although Marc is currently distant in the standings, he could become a contender for the title if he begins to win every race weekend.
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the championship, but then he fell out of the running. Now, it's Marc who is showing his strength, especially after his performance in Austria and here. Undoubtedly, he's one of the top riders and a serious contender for the title."
