Marc Marquez Triumphs in Aragon MotoGP but Admits Championship Hopes Remain Distant
Marc Marquez acknowledges that his hopes of winning the championship are still out of reach, even after his triumph in the Aragon MotoGP.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his gap in the championship standings to 70 points. Despite this achievement, he believes he remains too distant to be seen as a title contender at this stage.
Marc Marquez trails Jorge Martin by 70 points and is 47 points short of Francesco Bagnaia, who has secured the most wins in 2024, boasting seven Grand Prix triumphs and three Sprint race victories.
Marc Marquez acknowledged during the post-race press conference in Aragon that his chances for the championship are slim. "No, we are far," he said when questioned about his title hopes. "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
"It's not just one competitor; there are actually two who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. Sure, it will benefit us, but it won't be a game-changer. We are currently too far behind to compete for the championship this year."
"However, our aim is to compete for a spot in the top three. That’s a feasible objective. There are still many points to be earned and numerous events to unfold. Given the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, with storms and rain, the situation remains uncertain."
"We continue to have fun, which is crucial for me, and we will strive to compete with the best."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon race.
"This weekend has been fantastic, and the atmosphere has been incredible," he said. "However, we need to stay grounded as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I found the Red Bull Ring GP more significant because I felt great and was very close in performance to the leading competitors."
"The significance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to analyze our performance during races, but I'm aware there will be some weekends where we'll face more difficulties compared to others. Consistency will be our second crucial element."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's case, noting that despite being considered a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, he only managed to secure fifth place in Aragon after starting from 14th on the grid.
Marquez expressed that while they aim to replicate their performance in the future, achieving consistent speed remains a challenge. He noted that although Enea Bastianini showed impressive speed at Silverstone, maintaining that level of performance consistently is what they need to focus on.
Jorge Martin, who is currently ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship leader mentioned that Marc is currently distant in the standings, but added that if Marc manages to clinch victories in all the upcoming race weekends, he could become a contender for the title.
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the title, but then he fell out of the running. Now, after strong performances in Austria and here, Marc is in the mix. He's undoubtedly one of the top riders on the track and is definitely capable of fighting for the championship."
