Marc Marquez Triumphs in Aragon MotoGP but Admits Championship Hopes are Fading
Despite winning the Aragon MotoGP, Marc Marquez still feels he is not close enough to compete for the championship title.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his gap in the championship standings to 70 points. Despite the progress, he believes he remains too distant to be seen as a title contender.
In addition to trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who is the leading rider in 2024 with seven Grand Prix wins and three Sprint victories.
"We're not close," Marquez conceded during the post-race press conference in Aragon when questioned about his chances for the championship. "We're losing points consistently, and the gap is widening. We're too far behind."
"Moreover, it’s not just a single rider; there are two riders who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It can certainly benefit us, but it won't make a significant change. We're too far behind to compete for the championship this season."
"Let's aim to secure a spot in the top three. That seems like an achievable target. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could unfold. Given the unpredictable weather in Asia, with storms and rain, anything can happen."
"However, we continue to have fun, which is crucial for me. We will strive to move forward and compete with the leading contenders."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon round.
"The weekend was fantastic, and the atmosphere was incredible," he remarked. "However, we must remain realistic as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix was more significant for me because I felt really good and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"The importance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. It's crucial to grasp this during the races, though I am aware there will be weekends where we face more challenges than usual. Achieving this consistency is our second priority."
Marquez highlighted the case of Enea Bastianini, who was considered a serious contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix. However, Bastianini finished only fifth in Aragon, having started the race from 14th position on the grid.
“We aim to achieve this again in the future. While we can be quick on certain weekends—like Enea Bastianini was at Silverstone—one of my main focuses is improving consistency, which is the hardest aspect to master,” Marquez said.
Jorge Martin, who is ahead in the championship standings by 23 points after the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
"The championship leader mentioned that although Marc is currently behind, he could become a contender for the title if he begins to win every race weekend."
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the title. He fell out of the running, but now Marc has stepped up. After impressive performances in Austria and here, he's undeniably one of the top riders and a strong championship contender."
