Marc Marquez Triumphs at Aragon MotoGP but Admits Championship Hopes Remain Slim
Marc Marquez’s championship hopes remain subdued even after his win at the Aragon MotoGP.
Marc Marquez, who has won the World Championship eight times, claimed victory at the Aragon MotoGP. This win narrowed his gap in the championship points to 70. Despite this progress, Marquez believes he remains too far behind to be seen as a serious title contender at this stage.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points behind Francesco Bagnaia, who stands out in 2024 with the highest number of wins, having secured seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race wins.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez conceded, "No, we're quite distant," when questioned about his chances for the championship. He added, "We're continuously losing points, more and more. We're just too far behind."
"And it's not just one racer; there are actually two racers who are more consistent than we are."
"A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly be beneficial, but it won't be a game-changer. We're too distant from being contenders for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to compete for a place in the top three. That's an achievable target. There are still many points up for grabs and numerous events that could unfold, especially given the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, where storms and rain are common."
"However, what matters most to me is that we continue to have fun, and we will strive to compete with the top contenders."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon race.
"This weekend has been fantastic, the atmosphere has been incredible," he stated. "However, we must remain realistic as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I believe the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix was more significant because I felt really good and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"In this context, winning holds immense importance, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to comprehend the dynamics during races, but I'm aware that there will be weekends where we'll face more challenges than usual. Maintaining consistency will be crucial."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation, noting that despite being considered a significant contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, he only managed to finish fifth in Aragon after starting from 14th on the grid.
Marquez stated that their goal is to replicate their success in the future. He acknowledged that it's possible to be quick in a single race, as Enea Bastianini was at Silverstone, but emphasized that achieving consistency is the biggest challenge they face.
Jorge Martin, who is ahead in the championship by 23 points following the Aragon race, somewhat concurred with Marquez.
The championship frontrunner mentioned, “Marc is currently not close, but if he begins securing victories every race weekend, he could become a contender for the title.”
"Just two races ago, Enea Bastianini was a strong contender for the title. He had a setback but now Marc is in the spotlight. His performance in Austria and here shows he's a top rider on the grid capable of competing for the championship."
