Marc Marquez Penalized for Low Tyre Pressure, Loses Fourth Place at Dutch MotoGP
Marc Marquez handed penalty after Dutch MotoGP
Marc Marquez was penalized post-race at the Dutch MotoGP for having low tire pressure, which resulted in him losing his fourth-place finish.
Marc Marquez has been demoted from his fourth-place finish in the Dutch MotoGP after receiving a penalty for having tyre pressure below the required level.
As Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin quickly broke away from the pack, Marquez was spotted gesturing for Fabio di Giannantonio to go ahead, taking the lead of a group of riders contending for third place on the 8th lap of the 26-lap race.
Marquez likely acted out of concern that he would face challenges unless he trailed another racer for a significant portion of the competition.
Updated regulations for tire pressure in 2024 require that riders maintain a front tire pressure of at least 1.8 bar for 60% of a Grand Prix race. Failure to comply will result in a 16-second penalty added to their post-race time.
Although Marquez stayed in contention for a podium finish until the final moments of the grand prix, he did not complete the required number of 'legal' laps.
There is speculation that Marquez and Gresini could have contended that Enea Bastianini's maneuver at turn one, which forced Marquez to sit up and veer off course on the 21st lap, was a contributing factor that led to the Spaniard not meeting the 60% benchmark.
Several racers mentioned that the wind led to an unforeseen drop in tyre temperature during the grand prix. This event took place with an air temperature 3 degrees cooler than that of the Saturday Sprint, and the track temperature was 10 degrees lower.
In the end, it was determined that Marquez's front tire pressure was below the recommended levels set by the official supplier, leading the FIM Stewards to impose a standard penalty of 16 seconds.
The penalty causes Marquez to fall from fourth place to tenth in the Assen standings, which also means he loses 7 world championship points.
