Marc Marquez Faces Tough Challenge at Sachsenring: Rival Riders and Ducati’s Edge Loom Large
Marc Marquez's title as the 'favorite' has been discounted; however, the edge that GP24 currently enjoys is expected to disappear.
"Is this his track, and will he rise to the occasion? But rising to the occasion means reaching their level."
Marc Marquez isn't considered the top contender to win at Sachsenring, despite receiving a cautionary note. Nonetheless, he will gain an edge from a track that negates the advantage held by the factory Ducati bikes.
Marquez has emerged victorious in each of the eight German MotoGP races he has competed in, a remarkable record he aims to maintain this Sunday.
However, the dominant performance of Pramac's Jorge Martin and factory Ducati rider Pecco Bagnaia will significantly increase the difficulty of his challenge.
Broadcast journalist Simon Crafar remarked, "When questioned about this race, he responded that competing closely with Pecco and Jorge, who are currently performing exceptionally, would indicate he's doing well. Conversely, not doing well would mean trailing behind them."
"I concur. He hasn't been performing at the same standard. This is his track, and he is expected to rise to the occasion? However, he needs to elevate his game to match theirs, as they are currently excelling and have a minor advantage in terms of equipment."
Crafar maintained that it would be inaccurate to consider Marquez the frontrunner for winning the German MotoGP on Sunday, despite his impressive past performances at the circuit.
"If Marc maintains his usual approach, I've often observed him underplaying his abilities, keeping some strategies hidden, and then revealing an additional edge on Sunday," Crafar remarked.
“I get the reasoning. Why reveal the maximum speed achievable and give competitors an incentive to learn how to replicate it?”
The crew chief for Marquez at Gresini, Frankie Carchedi, heightened anticipation by asserting that the Sachsenring track is advantageous for the GP23.
"Assen presented significant challenges and favored the GP24s," Carcheci remarked. "In this instance, the difference is narrower, and the goal is well-defined."
Crafar replied, “Frankie is absolutely correct."
"On this track, a significant portion of the lap involves maintaining a steady throttle while continuously making minor adjustments to the bike's position."
"The process revolves around operating the machine, your expertise in handling it, adjusting the machine settings, and the tyre's ability to maintain grip."
"The GP24's advantage lies in its engine power and acceleration, but these factors aren't as crucial here. This levels the playing field in terms of the machinery, making the riders' skills more decisive."
Martin leads the championship by 10 points, with Bagnaia in second place after his strong performance at Assen last week.
Marquez holds the third position, trailing Martin by 58 points as they approach the German MotoGP, which will be followed by a month-long hiatus from racing.
"They really need to avoid an accident, particularly on Sunday," Crafar mentioned.
"The initial move when competing for the title is to secure that position. Next, you need to outperform your opponent, delivering a significant setback that will trouble them throughout the summer."
Pedro Acosta's final opportunity to set the record as the youngest MotoGP winner will come on Sunday.
In 2013, Marquez set a record at the age of 20 years and 63 days.
Ducati's performance compared to the KTMs has been remarkably impressive in the latest races.
Crafar commented on the aspirations of Acosta and KTM, stating: "I believe there is a missing element. Although their speed hasn’t decreased, the GP24s have progressed."
"Everyone is attempting to discover how to utilize the rear tire as effectively as Ducati and achieve similar speed."
"Making turns is really important in this place."
"Pedro possesses the necessary talent. However, to secure a victory on Sunday, he will need to deliver an extraordinary performance, perhaps even emulate Marc's remarkable feats."
“I’m unsure if he’s capable of doing that. I really hope he is…”
