Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend: Reflects on Emotional Triumph and Pressure to Succeed
Marc Marquez admitted he "felt the need" to achieve a flawless performance at the Aragon MotoGP. Reflecting on the Sprint, he mentioned, "I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, an achievement he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second margin, triumphed decisively in the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Except for the Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning and saw Marquez not recording a lap time, every other session was led by him.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez shared during the post-race press conference. "We dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the pit."
Marquez discussed the emotional intensity he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely lengthy, and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kg."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with every step, winning felt unbelievable. Instantly, my mind turned to the entire journey we've been through, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Márquez."
"They provided me with substantial support, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to strive towards them."
Throughout the race, Marquez managed to create a significant lead, allowing him to ponder over various things during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already envisioning myself on the podium," he mentioned. "But more than just the podium, it's the Gresini garage that's truly special. It's always filled with laughter and joy, like a constant celebration."
In addition to that, the primary factor was the people surrounding me. During extremely challenging times, being in a tough spot, having a compassionate and supportive team—people who were even more affected by the situation than I was—made all the difference.
The celebration felt quite unusual, as the excitement levels had been higher during other races where second or third place was achieved. Today’s celebration was more about feeling emotion rather than an adrenaline rush.
Marquez confessed that he experienced some pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix after leading every session except the wet Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he stated. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn't find any enjoyment because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're quick, it seems like you can handle things, maintain consistency, and appear intelligent; however, you're essentially the same person. Without speed, though, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since he fractured his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez mentioned that he considers it to be on the same level as his experience in Germany in 2021.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and going through a tough period, the significance of each win is heightened."
"Indeed, I have achieved 60 wins, but those two successes, along with my initial triumph in MotoGP, stand out as the most significant. They provide a unique boost of confidence and an added sense of assurance."
For a while, I hadn't been feeling well, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just cruising smoothly, focusing intently to avoid any errors.
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he had believed a win was achievable since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that opportunities will come their way. However, competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
“However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come.”
