Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Reflects on Emotional Journey and Team Support
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on myself" to ensure a "perfect" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He also mentioned that he didn't enjoy the Sprint race because he understood the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year stretch without a win by securing a victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp because of rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the post-race press conference. "We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up, where, to be honest, I chose with my team to remain in the garage."
Marquez expressed the intense emotions he experienced during nearly three years without a win and described the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top-tier class.
“We had an incredible sense of excitement right from the start of the race,” he stated. “The race was extremely lengthy, making it challenging to manage our emotions in the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3–4kg.”
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. I instantly began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I approached it as a newcomer, aimed to give my best effort, and we succeeded. Now, we've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
During the race, Marquez established a significant lead, allowing him to reflect on his performance in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he mentioned. "But more than just the podium, it's the Gresini garage that's really something special. It's always a lively and joyful place, like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the foremost factor was the individuals surrounding me. In times of significant hardship, being in a challenging and profound situation, having a compassionate and supportive team—people who are even more affected by the situation than I am—truly made a difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, in previous races, the excitement and adrenaline were much higher when finishing in second or third place. Today, however, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in every session except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he stated. "If you noticed in the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That’s why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle everything, you appear consistent and intelligent; however, you’re essentially the same person, it’s just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the top racers."
Having secured the win, Marquez ranks this achievement with his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his return to triumph after suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When dealing with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each victory changes."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two wins, along with my first victory in MotoGP, are the most significant. They boost my confidence in a unique way and provide an extra level of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first tested the Desmosedici in Valencia at the close of 2023.
“In the Valencia test, I understood that a race victory is on its way,” Marquez mentioned. “At that moment, I recognized that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter, and for that, we must continue our efforts.”
"However, it was in Valencia where I began to realize that it would eventually come."
