Marc Marquez Ends Victory Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend: A Triumph of Skill and Resilience
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I couldn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware that today was crucial," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year winless streak at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, a triumph he called "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with an 0.8-second lead, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Except for the Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, Marquez led all other sessions. He did not record a lap time during the Warm Up.
During the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as perfect. He mentioned that they led in all the sessions except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the box.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had been building up over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep our emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line felt like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, considering everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, with the Gresini team notably offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put forth my best effort, and we managed to achieve our goal. We're now setting new objectives and continuing to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already envisioning myself on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and joyful—it's always a celebration there."
"Besides that, the most important aspect was the people I had around me. In times of severe hardship, when you find yourself in a very challenging situation, having a compassionate and supportive team is crucial. Their empathy and the fact that they were even more affected by my struggles than I was made all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because there was more adrenaline in other races where we celebrated second or third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt the need to push myself," he remarked. "As you observed in yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it appears easier to handle things; you seem consistent and intelligent. However, without speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez views this victory as comparable to his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph after suffering an arm injury during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as Germany in 2021."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win changes."
"Although I have won 60 times, those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, are the most significant. They provide a unique boost of confidence and an extra sense of assurance."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
Marquez commented that during the Valencia test, he came to understand that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that it was clear they would have their chances. However, to compete for the championship title, continuous effort is necessary.
“However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen.”
