Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Reflects on Emotional Journey
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He said, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I knew today was crucial."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by clinching victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a triumph he called "perfect" after an outstanding performance.
Marquez led all the practice sessions, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin in Sunday's Grand Prix.
Marquez didn't record a lap time during the Warm Up, which was the only session he didn't lead. The Warm Up session was wet due to rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez shared at the post-race press conference. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to stay in the garage with the team."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"The race gave us an incredible sensation right from the start," he mentioned. "It was an extremely long race, and managing emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3 to 4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was truly amazing. Instantly, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the support from everyone around me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, with the Gresini team in particular offering me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal, and we're continuing to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate matters in the last laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "More than just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always like a celebration there."
"Besides that, the primary factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging times, having a compassionate and empathetic team is crucial. Their suffering seemed even greater than mine, and that truly made a difference."
"The celebration felt unusual as the adrenaline levels were higher in other races — even when finishing in second or third place — compared to today, which was driven more by emotion than adrenaline."
After leading all sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he felt some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he mentioned. "As you observed in the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you're fast, it seems like you can handle everything, remain steady, and make smart decisions. But in reality, you're the same person; it's just that without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his first triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
“When you’re dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes.”
Indeed, I have achieved 60 victories, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP triumph, hold the most significance as they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance.
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first tested the Desmosedici in Valencia at the close of 2023.
During the tests in Valencia, Marquez noted, "I understood then that a race victory is on the horizon. It was clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; we must continue to put in the effort for that goal."
"However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen."
