Marc Marquez Ends Three-Year MotoGP Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon Triumph
Marc Marquez admitted to "pressuring himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I couldn't find enjoyment because I was fully aware of the day's significance," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win during last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, a race he called "perfect."
Marquez led the way in all three practice runs, secured the pole position with a lead of 0.8 seconds, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain that fell from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated during the press conference after the race. "We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up where, quite frankly, I chose with my team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated during the nearly three years he spent without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he commented. "The race was extremely long, and it was hard to keep my emotions in check during the final laps. But when I finally crossed the finish line, it felt like I had lost 3 to 4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was an unbelievable experience. I instantly began reflecting on all the steps we took to get here, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and are continuing forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always entertaining and joyful; it's constantly like a celebration with them."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the support from those around me. When you're facing a tough and challenging situation, having a compassionate and empathetic team, who are more affected than I am, truly makes a difference."
"The celebration felt unusual since the adrenaline was higher during previous races when I finished in second or third place. Today, it was more about feeling the emotion rather than the rush of adrenaline."
Marc Marquez, who led all sessions except for the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning, confessed that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of stress today," he admitted. "During the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having fun because I knew how crucial today would be, and I was aware that I had a significant chance."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're fast, it seems like you can handle everything, you're steady, you're clever; but you're still the same person. Without speed, it's extremely hard to control the situation."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to stay competitive with the leading racers."
Having secured the win, Marquez regards it as significant as his triumph at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which had marked his first victory since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on par with 2021 in Germany," remarked Marquez.
"When dealing with numerous injuries and a particularly challenging period, the significance of each win changes."
"While I have secured 60 wins, the significance of those two victories, along with my inaugural win in MotoGP, stands out. They provide a unique boost in confidence, giving me that additional assurance."
"I hadn't been feeling well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just riding smoothly and effortlessly, but I remained highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he had believed a win was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test in late 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He recognized that there will be chances to succeed. However, he noted that contending for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, it was in Valencia that I began to realize it would eventually come."
