Marc Marquez Ends Nearly Three-Year Victory Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he “felt the need to push himself” to achieve a “flawless” performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
“I didn’t find the Sprint enjoyable because I was aware of the importance of today.”
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice rounds, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the post-race press conference. He mentioned, "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where I chose, along with the team, to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
“We felt incredible right from the start of the race,” he stated. “The race was extremely long, and it was tough to manage my emotions in the final laps, but when I finally crossed the finish line, it felt as if I had shed 3–4 kilograms.”
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. I instantly began reflecting on the entire journey we had undertaken, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with substantial assistance, and the Gresini team in particular offered me a significant chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to put in my maximum effort, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and are continuing to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, my thoughts were already on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a celebration there."
"The main factor was the support from those around me. When facing a challenging and intense situation, it's crucial to have a compassionate and supportive team. Their empathy and concern, sometimes even greater than my own, made all the difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline was much higher even when securing second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling the emotion rather than the rush of adrenaline."
Marquez confessed that he felt a bit of pressure to win the Grand Prix after leading in every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he remarked. "You could tell from the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having a good time because I understood the significance of today and recognized the crucial chance I had."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you possess the speed, it seems like you can handle everything, showing consistency and intelligence; however, without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to keep up with the leading competitors."
After securing a win, Marquez regards it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback following an arm injury sustained during the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with 2021 in Germany."
“When you’re dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of the wins changes.”
While it's accurate that I achieved 60 victories, those two wins, along with my initial triumph in MotoGP, hold the greatest significance as they boost your confidence uniquely and provide an additional sense of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, maintaining a smooth flow, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though this was Marquez’s 12th racing weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the end of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez stated, "I understood that a race win is on its way. At that moment, I realized we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is a different story; we need to continue our efforts to reach that goal."
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it is only a matter of time before it happens."
