Marc Marquez Clinches Emotional Victory at Aragon MotoGP: A Perfect Weekend Ends Three-Year Drought
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I wasn't having fun during the Sprint because I was aware that today was a crucial day."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by securing victory at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he called "perfect" from start to finish.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, the Warm Up session was wet. Marquez did not record a lap time, so he did not lead this session.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the press conference following the race. “We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up, where I opted, along with my team, to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had built up over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions during the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3–4kg."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back as I progressed, winning felt unbelievable. Right away, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we underwent, the supportive people surrounding me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to strive for them."
During the race, Marquez created a significant lead, allowing him to reflect on various matters in the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, my thoughts were already on the podium," he mentioned. "But more than the podium, it's the Gresini garage that's always on my mind. It's always a joyful and lively place, full of celebrations."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the people who surrounded me. In moments of extreme difficulty, being in a challenging situation, having a compassionate and supportive team who were even more affected than I was — that was what truly mattered."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because in previous races, the excitement was more intense — whether we were celebrating second or third place finishes. Today’s event was filled with emotion rather than adrenaline."
After leading in almost every session except the wet Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling a bit of pressure to secure a win in the Grand Prix to conclude his weekend.
"I felt the weight of expectations today," he remarked. "During yesterday's Sprint, I couldn't find joy because I was aware of the significance of today and recognized the crucial chance I had."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it appears you can handle the situation well, showing consistency and intelligence. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Having secured a win, Marquez places this success on the same level as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his return to the top step of the podium following a severe arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and going through a tough period, the significance of each win changes."
While it's accurate that I have 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my initial win in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They provide a unique boost in confidence, offering an additional layer of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was just coasting along, it felt effortless, but I made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he believed a win was achievable since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez came to the conclusion that a race victory is on the horizon. He acknowledged that they will have chances to succeed. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it happened."
