Marc Marquez Breaks Victory Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend: ‘Pressure Was On, but We Did It
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on myself" to achieve a "perfect" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I wasn’t having fun because I knew how crucial today was," he stated.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the event "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, was the only one not led by Marquez, as he did not record a lap time.
In the post-race press conference, Marquez described the weekend as flawless. He mentioned that they had been at the forefront in all sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the competition, we felt fantastic right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely lengthy and managing emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3–4 kilograms."
"Because my back felt progressively heavier, winning was unbelievable. I instantly thought about the entire journey we went through, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
“They provided significant assistance, and the Gresini team in particular offered me the chance. I came in as a rookie, aimed to give my all, and we achieved it. We've set new goals and will continue to move forward.”
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on his thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about standing on the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always entertaining and joyful; it's always like a celebration with them."
"Besides that, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. When you're facing a tough and challenging situation, having a compassionate and supportive team who are even more affected by the circumstances than you are can truly make a difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since the excitement levels were higher in previous races, even when finishing in second or third place. Today’s event was driven more by emotion rather than adrenaline."
After leading all sessions except the rain-affected Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you possess the speed, it seems like you can handle things, maintain consistency, and be intelligent in your actions. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory on par with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since he fractured his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez commented, "I consider it to be on the same level as 2021 in Germany."
"When facing numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes."
"I indeed achieved 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP victory, stand out as the most crucial because they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance."
“I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors.”
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez mentioned that he became confident a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that it was then he understood they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship is a different matter, and they must continue to work hard to reach that goal.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
