Marc Marquez Breaks Victory Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend: ‘I Put Pressure on Myself
Marc Marquez admitted to pushing himself to achieve an ideal performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't find the Sprint enjoyable because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win last weekend at the Aragon MotoGP, calling the event a "perfect" weekend following his triumphant performance.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, as it was damp due to rain from Saturday night through Sunday morning, and he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he finally crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start," he commented. "The race was extremely long, and managing our emotions in the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4kg."
"With each step, the weight on my back grew heavier, making this victory all the more remarkable. Instantly, my thoughts shifted to the entire journey we undertook, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They supported me immensely, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead early in the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts during the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, it's like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the most important aspect was the support from those around me. In times of extreme hardship, being surrounded by a compassionate and kind team who were more affected by my struggles than I was truly made all the difference."
"It was an unusual celebration, as the excitement in other races—whether finishing in second or third place—was often greater than it was today. Today's feeling was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez, who led every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, confessed to feeling some pressure to cap off his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure today," he explained. "During the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay concentrated. When you're fast, it appears you can handle the circumstances, stay consistent, and be clever; but in reality, you're the same person. It’s just that without speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and work towards keeping up with the leaders."
Having secured the win, Marquez regards it as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his first triumph following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you face numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of your wins changes."
"Although I secured 60 wins, those two triumphs, along with my initial MotoGP win, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide that additional assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and this weekend's laps were brief. I was simply riding, and it felt effortless; I was in the zone but also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the conclusion of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez observed that a victory was imminent. He noted that they would have their chances. However, he emphasized that competing for the championship is a different matter and requires continued effort.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
