Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Winless Streak with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on myself" to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware that today was crucial," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, describing the event as "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session that Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
During the press conference following the race, Marquez described the weekend as ideal. He mentioned that they were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "It was an extremely lengthy race, and it was tough to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3–4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing weight on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. My thoughts immediately turned to the journey we had taken, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I am tackling this as a beginner rider, striving to give my all, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue to move forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him the opportunity to ponder over matters in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he stated. "But more than the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a celebration there."
"Besides that, the initial factor was the individuals surrounding me. In challenging times, when you find yourself in a tough spot, having a compassionate team—people who are genuinely kind and even more affected than I am—truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since past races had higher adrenaline levels—even when finishing in second or third place—compared to today, which was driven more by emotion than by adrenaline."
Marquez, who led every session except for the rain-affected Sunday morning Warm Up, confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
"I felt the need to push myself today," he stated. "You could see from my performance in the Sprint yesterday that I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of the significance of today and recognized the important chance I had."
“For that reason, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation, stay consistent, and act wisely. However, you are the same person, and without speed, it becomes extremely challenging to manage everything."
“Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the leading competitors.”
Having secured victory, Marquez views this win as on par with his 2021 German Grand Prix success, his first major achievement following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 race in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win changes."
While I have indeed won 60 times, those two particular victories, along with my first win in MotoGP, hold the most significance for me as they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide that extra assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but highly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite this being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed his confidence that a race victory is on the horizon. He noted that the team will have their chances. However, he mentioned that competing for the championship will require continued effort and hard work.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
