Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend: Emotional Triumph and Renewed Confidence
Marc Marquez admitted he "placed pressure on himself" to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't enjoy the Sprint because I was aware that today was crucial," he explained.
After nearly three years without a win, Marc Marquez broke his losing streak at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, calling the experience "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, damp from rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, was the only one not led by Marquez since he didn't record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the press conference after the race. He mentioned that they were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he finally crossed the finish line to achieve his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the competition, we had an incredible sensation right from the start," he mentioned. "The race was extremely lengthy, and managing our emotions during the final laps was challenging, but as soon as I crossed the finish line, it felt as though I had shed 3–4kg."
"Due to my back feeling increasingly burdened with each step, winning this was extraordinary. Instantly, I began reflecting on the entire journey, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant assistance, particularly the Gresini team who offered me a chance. Approaching as a novice rider, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on his performance in the final laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and cheerful place, constantly filled with a party atmosphere."
"Besides, the most important aspect was the support from those around me. In moments of extreme difficulty, having a compassionate and empathetic team that felt my struggles even more intensely than I did truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt quite unusual; in other races, the adrenaline was much higher, even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about feeling emotional than experiencing a rush of adrenaline."
After leading every session except for the rain-soaked Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed that he experienced some pressure to finish his weekend with a Grand Prix win.
“I felt a lot of pressure today,” he mentioned. “You could tell from the Sprint yesterday that I wasn’t having fun because I understood that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me.”
"Therefore, I made an effort to stay focused. When you have the necessary speed, it appears that you can handle the situation well, remain consistent, and act intelligently. However, if you lack speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading contenders."
Marquez counts this victory along with his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first success following his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated that he considers it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany.
"When dealing with numerous injuries and challenging times, the significance of each win changes."
While it's accurate that I have achieved 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my initial triumph in MotoGP, hold the greatest significance. They provide a unique boost in confidence and grant an extra level of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the end of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted, "I understood that a race victory is within reach." He went on to say, "I recognized that we would have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter entirely, and we'll need to continue putting in the effort for that."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that eventually it would come."
