Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend, Reflects on Pressure and Emotional Victory
Marc Marquez admitted to "pushing himself" to achieve a "flawless" MotoGP weekend at Aragon.
"I couldn't enjoy the Sprint race because I was aware of how crucial today was," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing at last weekend’s Aragon MotoGP, calling it a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, dominated the Sprint race, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp from rain that fell overnight on Saturday and continued into Sunday morning, because he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as ideal during the press conference following the race. He mentioned, "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose, along with my team, to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he mentioned. "The race was extremely long, and it was challenging to keep my emotions in check during the final laps. However, crossing the finish line made me feel as if I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was an unbelievable achievement. Right away, my thoughts turned to the entire journey we took, the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
“They provided me with tremendous support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward.”
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "But more than the podium, I was thinking about the Gresini garage, which is always lively and cheerful, like a constant celebration."
"The most important factor was the support from the people around me. When you find yourself in an extremely tough situation, having a compassionate team that is more affected by your struggles than you are can truly make all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual since there was more adrenaline during other races when we celebrated second or third places. Today, the feeling was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marc Marquez acknowledged that he was under some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix, especially after leading every session except for the wet Sunday morning Warm Up.
"Today, I felt the weight of expectations," he remarked. "Yesterday during the Sprint, I couldn't really enjoy myself because I was aware of how crucial today would be and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation, remain consistent, and act intelligently. However, without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
“Let’s aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the leading racers.”
With this victory, Marquez ranks it up there with his 2021 German Grand Prix win, which marked his comeback after fracturing his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
“I regard it on the same level as the 2021 race in Germany,” Marquez stated.
"When you face numerous injuries during a challenging period, the worth of each win becomes more significant."
While I've had 60 wins, it's those two victories and my first in MotoGP that stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique way, providing that extra assurance you need.
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and this weekend's laps were brief. I was simply riding effortlessly, in a smooth flow, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez noted, "I understood that a race victory is within reach." He added, "I realized that we'll get our chances. Competing for the championship is a different matter, and for that, we need to continue our efforts."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that eventually it would come."
