Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend: Reflects on Emotional Triumph and Future Aspirations
Marc Marquez admitted that he "felt the need to push myself" to achieve a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today's race," he said.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, an event he called "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice rounds, secured pole position with a 0.8-second advantage, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session not dominated by Marquez was the Warm Up, which remained wet due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, and he didn't record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez stated during the press conference following the race. “We were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to remain in the garage with the team.”
Marquez shared his feelings about the emotional tension that had been building up during the nearly three years without a win, and the relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the top-tier category.
"We had an incredible sensation right from the start of the race," he remarked. "The race was extremely long, and managing emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey we undertook, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a newcomer, aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and are continuing to move forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to ponder various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he mentioned. "Beyond the podium, the Gresini garage is always a lively and cheerful place; there's always a celebration happening there."
"The main factor was the people around me. In extremely challenging times, being surrounded by a compassionate and supportive team, who were even more affected than I was, made all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because, in other races, the adrenaline was higher when I finished in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading every session except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"Today, I felt the need to push myself," he expressed. "If you noticed during the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're fast, it seems like you can handle things well, stay steady, and make smart decisions; but you're the same person, and without the speed, managing the situation becomes incredibly tough."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the top contenders."
Marquez regards this win as just as significant as his victory at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which had marked his return to triumph after his arm injury at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez remarked that he considers it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany.
“When dealing with numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of each win changes.
"Indeed, I have 60 wins to my name, but those two particular victories, along with my first MotoGP win, stand out as the most significant. They boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, and it felt effortless as I rode smoothly, but I was particularly focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the test in Valencia, Marquez mentioned, "I understood that a race win is on the horizon. It was clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter, and we need to continue our efforts for that."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it was only a matter of time before it happened."
