Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "placed a lot of pressure on himself" to have a "flawless" performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I wasn't having fun during the Sprint because I understood the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win at the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, celebrating what he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second advantage, triumphed convincingly in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which took place on a track dampened by rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez stated during the press conference following the race. “We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where I chose to remain in the garage after discussing with the team.”
Marquez discussed the emotional journey he endured during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he experienced as he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he commented. "It was an exceptionally long race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"Due to the increasing strain on my back with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Instantly, my mind went to the entire journey we've been through, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant support, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a newcomer, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We have set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez gained a significant lead during the race, allowing him to reflect on various thoughts during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he mentioned. "It's not just the podium; the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful, almost like a constant celebration."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging and profound circumstances, having a team of genuinely kind and empathetic individuals who were even more affected than I was — that was crucial."
"The celebration felt unusual as previous races had more adrenaline when finishing in second or third place. Today was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading all the sessions except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up, Marquez confessed that he felt a bit of pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he explained. "During the Sprint yesterday, I wasn't having any fun because I was aware that today was crucial and that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle everything—you become consistent and appear smart. But in reality, you're the same person; it's just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to stay competitive with the top contenders."
Marquez views this win as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his first success following the arm injury he sustained at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez stated, "I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany."
"When you're dealing with numerous injuries and a particularly challenging time, the significance of wins changes."
Indeed, I have achieved 60 wins, but those two triumphs, along with my initial win in MotoGP, hold the greatest significance as they boost your confidence in a unique manner and provide an added sense of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a long time, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding; it felt effortless, and I was in the zone, but I paid extra attention to avoid any errors."
While this marked Marquez’s 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that there will be chances to succeed, but emphasized that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, it was in Valencia that I began to realize that it would inevitably come."
