Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "placed pressure on himself" to have a "flawless" weekend at the Aragon MotoGP. He mentioned that "during the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the significance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, a success he called a "perfect" weekend.
Marquez led all three practice runs, secured pole position with a 0.8-second lead, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday with a five-second advantage over Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez did not lead was the Warm Up, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he did not record a lap time.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the press conference following the race. He mentioned that they were ahead in every session, except for the Warm Up, where he and the team chose to remain in the pit.
Marquez discussed the emotional journey of nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he remarked. "It was an extremely long race, and managing emotions during the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, my back felt increasingly burdened, making this victory even more remarkable. Right away, my mind went to all the efforts we made, the people who supported me, my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez."
“They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me a chance. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to put in my best effort, and we succeeded. We've set new goals now and will continue to push forward.”
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate other matters in the closing laps.
"In the last three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But more than just the podium, the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a festive atmosphere around them."
"Additionally, the main factor was the support of those around me. In extremely challenging times, being surrounded by a compassionate and caring team, who were more concerned for my well-being than their own, truly made a significant difference."
"The celebration felt quite unusual because there was more adrenaline in some other races — when celebrating second or third places — than today. Today was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading in all sessions except for the wet Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed to feeling some pressure to finish his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
“I felt a lot of pressure today,” he stated. “During yesterday’s Sprint, you could tell I wasn't having fun, because I was aware of how crucial today is and recognized the significant opportunity I have.”
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, everything seems more manageable, you appear consistent and smart; but fundamentally, you're the same person. Without the speed, handling the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to keep up with the leading competitors."
Marquez ranks this win up there with his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his comeback after he broke his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
"I rank it on the same level as Germany in 2021," stated Marquez.
"When faced with numerous injuries, a challenging period makes the significance of the wins different."
"I did win 60 races, but those two victories, along with my initial win in MotoGP, hold the most significance because they boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an added sense of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite some time, and the laps we had this weekend were brief. I was just going along, it felt effortless, and I was in the zone but made sure to stay very focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he revealed that he believed winning was achievable from his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez stated, "I understood that a race victory is within reach. It was clear to me that we will have our chances. Competing for the championship is another matter; we need to continue our efforts to achieve that goal."
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually happen."
