Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez "put stress on himself" to achieve a "flawless" Aragon MotoGP weekend.
"I didn't have fun during the Sprint because I was aware that today was a crucial day."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year spell without a win by claiming victory at last weekend's Aragon MotoGP, calling the weekend "perfect."
Marquez led all three practice runs, secured the pole position with a 0.8-second lead, triumphed in the Sprint with a commanding performance, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The only session Marquez didn't lead was the Warm Up, which was damp from rain that fell overnight and into Sunday morning, as he didn't record a lap time.
“It was an ideal weekend,” Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. “We dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the garage.”
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had been accumulating over the nearly three years since his last win, and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th premier class victory.
“In the competition, we felt incredible right from the start,” he remarked. “The race was extremely long, and it was tough to keep my emotions in check during the final laps, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3–4kg.”
"Due to the increasing strain on my back, winning this was truly remarkable. My thoughts instantly went to the entire journey we undertook, the support from everyone around me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with substantial assistance, particularly the Gresini team who offered me the chance. I approached this as a novice rider, aiming to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set a new goal and will continue to push forward."
Throughout the race, Marquez established a significant lead, allowing him to reflect during the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium," he remarked. "But even more than the podium, it's the Gresini garage that's especially entertaining and joyful—it's always a festive atmosphere with them."
"Additionally, the most important factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, being surrounded by a compassionate and supportive team—individuals who were even more affected by my struggles than I was—made all the difference."
"The celebration felt unusual because, in past races, the adrenaline was higher even when finishing in second or third place. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
After leading all the sessions except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning, Marquez confessed that he experienced some pressure to end his weekend with a win in the Grand Prix.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he mentioned. "Yesterday, during the Sprint, you could see I wasn’t having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"For that reason, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the necessary speed, it seems easier to handle the situation, maintain consistency, and make smart decisions. However, if you lack speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and work towards competing closely with the leading racers."
Marquez regards this victory as significant as his win at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first triumph since he broke his arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez remarked, "I consider it to be on par with the 2021 event in Germany."
"When facing numerous injuries and a challenging period, the significance of the wins changes."
Indeed, I have won 60 times, but those two wins, along with my inaugural MotoGP victory, hold the most significance. They boost your confidence in a unique way and provide an additional sense of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a long period, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding, and it felt effortless. I was in the zone but made sure to stay extra focused to avoid any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez’s twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, he mentioned that he had believed winning was achievable ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez expressed his confidence that a race victory is imminent. He acknowledged that the team will have their chances to succeed, but emphasized that competing for the championship will require continued effort and dedication.
"However, in Valencia, I began to realize that it would inevitably come eventually."
