Marc Marquez Breaks Three-Year Drought with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Victory, Reflects on Emotional Triumph
Marc Marquez admitted to "putting pressure on himself" to achieve a flawless performance during the Aragon MotoGP weekend. "I didn't enjoy the Sprint race because I was aware of how crucial today is," he stated.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, an event he called "perfect".
Marquez led the timesheets in all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a margin of 0.8 seconds, triumphed in the Sprint race decisively, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, was the only one where Marquez did not finish first, as he did not record a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez stated at the press conference following the race. "We were ahead in all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where the team and I chose to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win, and the relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"We felt incredible right from the start of the race," he shared. "It was an exceptionally long race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was challenging. However, crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4 kilograms."
“Due to my back progressively becoming more burdensome, winning this was amazing. Instantly, I began reflecting on every step we took, everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother Alex Marquez.”
"They provided me with significant support, particularly the Gresini team, who offered me the chance. As a newcomer, I aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to push forward."
Marquez established a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate various thoughts in the closing laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he mentioned. "More than just the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it's always a party with them."
"Additionally, the initial factor was the individuals surrounding me. During extremely challenging times, when you find yourself in a profoundly tough spot, having a truly compassionate team — people who are more affected by your struggles than you are — that was crucial."
The celebration felt unusual because there was more adrenaline in other races where we celebrated second or third places. Today, it was more about feeling emotional rather than being fueled by adrenaline.
Marquez acknowledged feeling some pressure to secure a Grand Prix victory after leading every session except for the rainy Warm Up on Sunday morning.
"I felt a lot of pressure today," he explained. "Yesterday, during the Sprint, you could tell I wasn't having fun because I was aware that today was crucial and I had a significant chance to make an impact."
"That's why I aimed to stay concentrated. When you're quick, it seems like you can handle everything, stay steady, and make wise decisions; but you're still the same person. Without that speed, though, managing things becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to keep up with the leading competitors."
After securing victory, Marquez views this win as significant as his 2021 German Grand Prix success, which marked his comeback following an arm injury from the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez mentioned that he considers it to be on par with his experience in Germany in 2021.
“When you’re dealing with numerous injuries and facing a particularly tough period, the significance of each win is heightened.”
While I have secured 60 wins, those two particular victories, along with my first one in MotoGP, hold the most significance. They boost my confidence in a unique manner and provide an additional sense of assurance.
"I hadn't felt well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was merely riding, it felt effortless, I was in the zone but very focused on avoiding any errors."
Despite being only his twelfth race weekend with the Gresini Ducati team, Marquez revealed that he had believed in the possibility of winning ever since his initial experience on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is within reach. He recognized that we will have our chances to succeed. However, competing for the championship is a different matter and requires ongoing effort.
"In Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
