Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Winless Streak with Perfect Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted that he "put pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He added, "During the Sprint, I wasn't having fun because I was aware of the importance of today."
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, a race he referred to as "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with a lead of 0.8 seconds, claimed a commanding victory in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
Marquez did not record the fastest lap in the Warm Up session, which was damp due to rain from Saturday night into Sunday morning, as he didn't complete a timed lap.
Marquez described the weekend as flawless during the post-race press conference. He mentioned that they dominated all the sessions, except for the Warm Up, where he and his team chose to remain in the garage.
Marquez discussed the emotional tension that had accumulated over nearly three years without a win and the sense of relief he experienced when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th top-tier victory.
"We had an incredible sense of excitement right from the start of the race," he stated. "The race was extremely lengthy, and managing my emotions during the final laps was challenging, but crossing the finish line felt like shedding 3-4 kilograms."
"With each step, my back felt increasingly burdened, so winning this was unbelievable. Right away, my mind went to the entire journey we undertook, all the people who supported me, and my family, including my girlfriend and my brother, Alex Marquez."
"They provided me with significant assistance, and the Gresini team, in particular, offered me the chance. I came in as a novice rider, aimed to give my all, and we succeeded. We've set new goals and will continue to move forward."
Marquez created a significant lead during the race, allowing him to contemplate during the last few laps.
"In the final three laps, I was already thinking about being on the podium," he remarked. "But more than the podium, the Gresini team's garage is always a lively and joyful place, it always feels like a celebration there."
"Besides that, the primary factor was the support from those around me. In extremely challenging circumstances, having a compassionate and caring team, who were more distressed than I was, truly made a significant impact."
"The celebration felt quite unusual since there was more adrenaline during other races when I was celebrating second and third places. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged that he experienced some pressure to finish his weekend with a win at the Grand Prix, especially after leading every session except for the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"Today, I felt a lot of pressure," he remarked. "As you noticed during yesterday's Sprint, I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today is and I understood that I had a significant chance ahead of me."
"That's why I aimed to stay focused. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation well, staying consistent and making smart decisions; but fundamentally, you're the same person. It's just that without the speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
"Let's aim to improve our speed in the upcoming races and try to compete closely with the top contenders."
Marquez views this win as comparable to his 2021 German Grand Prix victory, which marked his first triumph since suffering a broken arm at the 2020 Spanish Grand Prix.
Marquez compared it to his experience in Germany in 2021, saying it was of a similar level.
"When a team faces numerous injuries and tough times, the significance of their wins is greater."
While it is accurate that I have claimed victory 60 times, those two wins, along with my inaugural MotoGP triumph, hold the greatest significance. They instill a unique sense of confidence and provide an additional boost in self-assurance.
"I hadn't been feeling well for a while, and the laps this weekend were brief. I was simply riding along with ease, just going with the flow, but I was also very focused on avoiding any errors."
Even though this marked Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he mentioned that he had believed in the possibility of winning since his initial ride on the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is on the horizon. He understood that there will be chances to succeed. However, he emphasized that contending for the championship is another matter, requiring continued effort and hard work.
"However, while in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
