Marc Marquez Breaks Nearly Three-Year Victory Drought with ‘Perfect’ Aragon MotoGP Weekend
Marc Marquez admitted to "placing pressure on himself" to achieve a "flawless" performance at the Aragon MotoGP weekend. He mentioned that he didn't find the Sprint race enjoyable because he was aware of the significance of the day.
Marc Marquez broke his nearly three-year streak without a win by triumphing in the Aragon MotoGP last weekend, an event he called "perfect".
Marquez led all three practice sessions, secured pole position with an 0.8-second lead, triumphed decisively in the Sprint, and finished the Grand Prix on Sunday five seconds ahead of Jorge Martin.
The Warm Up was the only session not led by Marquez, due to the track being wet from rain overnight and into Sunday morning, and Marquez not recording a lap time.
"It was an ideal weekend," Marquez mentioned during the post-race press conference. "We led every session, except for the Warm Up where, to be honest, I chose with the team to remain in the garage."
Marquez discussed the emotional tension he experienced during the nearly three-year period without a win, and the sense of relief he felt when he crossed the finish line to secure his 60th victory in the premier class.
"In the race, we felt incredible right from the start," he stated. "It was an extremely long race, and managing my emotions in the final laps was tough, but crossing the finish line made me feel like I had shed 3-4kg."
“Due to my back feeling increasingly heavy with each step, winning this was unbelievable. Right away, I began reflecting on the entire journey, thinking about everyone who supported me, including my family, my girlfriend, and my brother, Alex Marquez.
"They provided me with significant support, particularly the Gresini team, who offered me the chance. I started as a novice rider, aiming to give my all, and we succeeded. Now, we set new goals and continue to move forward."
Throughout the race, Marquez managed to create a significant lead, giving him the opportunity to contemplate during the closing laps.
“In the final three laps, I was already thinking about the podium,” he remarked. “Beyond the podium, the atmosphere in the Gresini garage is always lively and cheerful; it’s always a celebration around them.”
"Additionally, the initial factor was the people surrounding me. In extremely challenging circumstances, being in a tough spot, the presence of a genuinely compassionate team made a significant difference. Their empathy and concern for my well-being exceeded my own."
"It was an unusual celebration; the excitement was greater in past races where we finished second or third. Today, it was more about emotion than adrenaline."
Marquez acknowledged that he felt a certain amount of pressure to finish the weekend with a Grand Prix win, especially after leading in every session except the rainy Sunday morning Warm Up.
"I felt a lot of self-imposed pressure today," he stated. "Yesterday during the Sprint, you could see I wasn't having a good time because I was aware of how crucial today's event was and the significant chance it presented for me."
"Therefore, I aimed to stay concentrated. When you have the speed, it seems like you can handle the situation; you're consistent and clever. However, without that speed, managing the situation becomes extremely challenging."
“Let's aim for improved speed in the upcoming races and strive to compete closely with the leading contenders.”
Marquez views this win as comparable to his success at the 2021 German Grand Prix, which marked his first victory since he broke his arm at the Spanish Grand Prix in 2020.
"I consider it to be on the same level as the 2021 event in Germany," Marquez stated.
"When dealing with numerous injuries and facing tough times, the significance of winning becomes greater."
"Yes, I have won 60 times, but those two wins, along with my first MotoGP victory, are the most significant because they boost your confidence differently and give you an extra level of assurance."
"I hadn't felt well for quite a while, and this weekend the laps were brief. I was simply riding, feeling at ease and in the zone, but I made sure to stay highly focused to avoid any errors."
Despite it being Marquez's 12th race weekend with the Gresini Ducati squad, he revealed that he had believed winning was achievable ever since he first rode the Desmosedici during the Valencia test at the close of 2023.
During the Valencia test, Marquez acknowledged that a race victory is forthcoming. He expressed confidence that opportunities would present themselves. However, he noted that competing for the championship requires continued effort and dedication.
"However, during my time in Valencia, I began to realize that it would eventually come."
