Marc Marquez Battles Injury and Adversity at Sachsenring: Finger Fracture and Rib Bruise Hamper Eleven-Time Winner
Marc Marquez sustains a broken finger and complains of significant rib pain
Marc Marquez has been found to have a broken left index finger and a severe bruise on his ribcage following a highside crash at Sachsenring.
Marc Marquez, who has won at the Sachsenring circuit eleven times, experienced a dramatic day on Friday during the German MotoGP.
The Gresini Ducati racer faced mechanical problems, experienced two crashes, and needed to visit the Medical Centre. Despite these setbacks, he initially led the timesheets but was eventually bumped out of the top ten, landing in Qualifying 1.
Marquez experienced a minor slide (shown in the image) as he was heading for second place behind Jorge Martin during the morning practice. Later in the afternoon, he was thrown off his GP23 at the daunting Turn 11.
In the chilly weather, Marquez was one of several riders who lost control on the right turns, causing the rear of his bike to grip the track and catapult him into a high-speed crash at 190 km/h.
Following a delay caused by concerns over Fabio di Giannantonio's crash at Turn 1, Marquez was prepared to rejoin when the session resumed and quickly placed his Desmosedici at the top of the leaderboard.
However, he subsequently made a pit stop and proceeded to the Medical Centre for an examination of his ribs due to a previous collision.
Although Marquez did not come back, his previous lap time seemed sufficient to guarantee him a spot in Qualifying 2 directly. However, in the last few minutes, he was bumped down to 13th place.
It was subsequently discovered that Marquez has a broken left index finger and a significant bruise on his ribcage.
"The bike felt good, but the crash in the afternoon significantly affected our first day at the Sachsenring," said Marquez.
"I'm not concerned about the broken finger; it's the bruised ribs that are really troubling me and stopped me from carrying on with the session."
The eight-time world champion has been cleared to compete tomorrow. However, the Spaniard hinted that it isn’t certain: "Now it's time to rest, and we'll assess my physical condition tomorrow morning."
On Friday, Marco Bezzecchi and Enea Bastianini experienced serious crashes at the Ralf Waldmann (Waterfall) corner, Turn 11.
Ten riders crashed during the afternoon session, each incident occurring on right-hand turns.
A number of people believe that the accidents were caused by the enhanced traction of the 2024 Michelin rear tire, which put additional pressure on the front tire during the cold and windy weather.
In the meantime, his brother and teammate Alex Marquez had a strong performance on the track during his first day after signing a new contract with Gresini.
"It was a good day overall, despite the uncooperative wind and challenging conditions," Alex remarked. "We experimented with various configurations and discovered some promising options."
"Even with numerous changes, we retained our momentum, showing progress compared to Assen. Tomorrow, we are ready to compete for a place in the first two rows."
"We have made progress, but we still need to improve our race pace."
Significant temperature increases are forecasted for Saturday, along with a potential for thunderstorms.
