Marc Marquez Battles Injuries and Adversity at Sachsenring MotoGP: A Weekend of Survival and Grit
Marc Marquez: "I raced under the influence of the most potent analgesic to see what was possible."
Marc Marquez: "Aiming for the win required an impeccable weekend. However, every possible obstacle came our way!"
Marc Marquez's challenging weekend at the Sachsenring MotoGP in Germany progressed on Saturday as the Gresini Ducati competitor resumed racing, despite suffering from a broken finger and bruised ribs following his 190km/h crash on Friday.
Solidifying his quick pace with a fifth-place finish in the last practice session, Marquez's aspirations to advance through Qualifying 1 suffered setbacks due to mechanical issues with his backup motorcycle, and his chances were ultimately ruined when he encountered interference from Stefan Bradl.
The FIM Stewards later imposed a penalty on the HRC test rider, positioning Marquez in the 13th slot on the starting grid.
"Bradl expressed his apologies to Marc once more, stating, 'Right after the session, I made it a point to personally discuss the matter with him. Such incidents are sometimes unavoidable, and I fully acknowledge that I was at fault. I'm willing to face the consequences for tomorrow’s race.'"
In the Sprint race, Marquez methodically overtook his competitors, ultimately executing a final-corner maneuver to surpass a similarly battle-worn Maverick Vinales for the sixth position.
Marquez finished 6.281 seconds behind the victorious Jorge Martin, and he confessed that achieving his first win with Ducati required an impeccable weekend. However, a combination of injuries, mechanical problems, and qualifying difficulties ensured it was far from that.
"Occasionally, things are beyond your grasp," Marquez remarked. "Like I mentioned on Thursday, to aim for the win, everything had to go flawlessly for us. Yet, this weekend, whatever could go wrong in the garage, did go wrong!
"We encountered several technical issues initially, followed by a significant accident at Turn 11 which compounded our difficulties. Furthermore, during Q1, we faced an additional technical setback with the second set of tyres, alongside an unfortunate incident involving Stefan."
"Beginning from the 13th position at Sachsenring, your options are quite limited, mainly because there are only one or two opportunities to advance positions each lap. However, the silver lining is that once I found myself on an unobstructed track, my speed was comparable to that of the leaders, which is certainly positive."
Marquez, who has an undefeated record at the Sachsenring in the premier-class races, sees the upcoming race as a battle to endure, considering his current physical state.
"Understandably, I'm somewhat annoyed because I really feel in tune with the bike and I sense my speed," he expressed. "The recovery during the race was positive. However, tomorrow we must endure and aim to achieve our utmost as we managed today."
The individual, aged 30, mentioned that they participated in the Sprint under the influence of the most potent pain reliever allowed. They added, "In two or three hours, we'll assess our situation."
"The digit is broken; it hurts, but it's bearable. However, the main issue lies with the ribs, particularly during the race as I begin to inhale more profoundly, and the discomfort intensifies progressively."
"Due to that, I managed to complete just three laps in the afternoon of yesterday and another three consecutive laps earlier today. However, aside from that, let's explore what possibilities lie ahead."
Marquez acknowledged, "I owe it to the predominance of left-hand turns on this track for my ability to compete; without them, I probably wouldn't have raced."
