Marc Marquez Battles Injuries After Sachsenring Highside: Finger Fracture Less Concerning Than Rib Bruises
Marc Marquez Downplays Finger Fracture Concerns, Rib Pain Takes Precedence
Following a highside incident at Sachsenring, Marc Marquez has been found to have a broken left index finger and a significant contusion within his ribcage.
At the German MotoGP, the Sachsenring witnessed an action-packed Friday courtesy of Marc Marquez, who has clinched victory at this circuit eleven times.
The rider from Gresini Ducati encountered mechanical problems, experienced two crashes, and made a visit to the Medical Center, yet managed to lead the timing charts before eventually dropping out of the top ten, leading to participation in Qualifying 1.
Following a minor slide-off during his ride to a second-place finish behind Jorge Martin in the morning session, Marquez was forcefully ejected from his GP23 at the daunting Turn 11, early in the afternoon.
Among the many who suffered due to the track drying and navigating through several right-hand curves under chilly weather, Marquez experienced his motorcycle's rear end grip suddenly, propelling him into a high-speed crash at 190km/h.
Following a pause in the session triggered by red flags after Fabio di Giannantonio's crash at Turn 1, Marquez was prepared to rejoin as the action resumed, swiftly securing the fastest time with his Desmosedici.
However, he subsequently made a pit stop and proceeded to the Medical Centre to get an examination for his ribs due to a previous collision.
Marquez failed to make a comeback, yet his initial lap time seemed sufficient for a straight pass to Qualifying 2… that is, until he was relegated to 13th place during the last moments.
Subsequent disclosures revealed that Marquez suffered a break in his left index finger alongside significant bruising to his ribcage.
"Marquez expressed that he felt comfortable with the motorcycle, yet it's clear that the crash in the afternoon significantly affected the initial day at the Sachsenring."
"I'm not overly concerned about the cracked bone in my finger; however, it's the contusion on my rib cage that's truly causing me discomfort and stopped me from finishing the session."
The eight-time world champion has been cleared to compete tomorrow, however, the Spanish athlete hinted that participation is not certain: "Now I need to rest, and we'll evaluate my physical state tomorrow morning."
Marco Bezzecchi and Enea Bastianini experienced significant crashes at the Turn 11 Ralf Waldmann (Waterfall) corner during Friday's session.
During the afternoon session, ten participants crashed at right-hand turns.
Several believed the incidents were due to the enhanced traction provided by the 2024 Michelin back tire, which exerted pressure on the front tire under the chilly and breezy weather conditions.
In the meantime, Alex Marquez, who is not only a brother but also a teammate, had a successful initial day of racing after recently securing a new deal with Gresini.
"Despite the challenging weather and conditions, Alex described the day as favorable. He mentioned that they experimented with various configurations and discovered some valuable approaches."
Despite the numerous changes we implemented, the sensation remained intact. We've made progress since Assen, and tomorrow positions on the first two rows are within our reach.
"Efforts to improve our race speed are ongoing, yet we're moving in the right direction."
On Saturday, a significant increase in temperatures is anticipated, accompanied by the possibility of thunderstorms.
