Marc Marquez Acknowledges Championship Hurdles Despite Aragon MotoGP Triumph
Marc Marquez's hopes for the championship are still distant even after his win in the Aragon MotoGP.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez clinched a win at the Aragon MotoGP, narrowing his championship points gap to 70. Despite this achievement, he believes he is still not close enough to be a serious title contender.
Besides trailing Jorge Martin by 70 points, Marquez is also 47 points short of Francesco Bagnaia. Bagnaia holds the record for the most wins in 2024, having secured seven Grand Prix victories and three Sprint race triumphs.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez acknowledged, "No, we are distant," when questioned about his chances for the championship. He continued, "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
"It's not just a single rider; there are actually two riders who maintain a steadier performance compared to us."
“A single weekend won't transform our lives. It will certainly benefit us, but it won't bring about a major change. We are too distant from competing for the championship this year.”
"However, our aim should be to compete for a spot within the top three. It's a feasible target. There are still many points to be gained and numerous events that could unfold. Given the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, such as storms and rain, anything can happen."
"However, our enjoyment remains, which is crucial to me, and we will continue to strive and compete against the leading players."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon event.
"This weekend has been fantastic, and the atmosphere has been incredible," he mentioned. "However, we need to stay realistic because the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I believe the Red Bull Ring GP was more significant for me as I felt great and was very close in performance to the leading competitors."
"The importance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We need to learn and adapt during races, but I recognize that there will be weekends when we face greater challenges than usual. Achieving consistency will be crucial."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's situation, noting that despite being viewed as a strong contender for the championship following his double victory at the British Grand Prix, Bastianini finished only fifth in Aragon after starting 14th in qualifying.
Marquez shared that while they aim to replicate their success in the future, achieving consistent speed across multiple weekends is a challenge. He noted Enea Bastianini's quick performance at Silverstone as an example, but emphasized that maintaining consistent performance is the toughest goal to achieve.
Jorge Martin, currently leading the championship by 23 points after the Aragon race, partially concurred with Marquez.
"The current leader of the championship stated that although Marc is currently trailing, he could become a contender for the title if he begins to win every race weekend."
"Just two races back, Enea Bastianini was a contender for the title. He was in the fight, then he wasn't. Now, it's Marc's turn; after performing well in Austria and here, he's proving to be one of the top riders on the grid who can compete for the championship."
