Leclerc Sounds Caution Despite Ferrari’s Monza Triumph: More Upgrades Needed to Outpace McLaren
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvement may not suffice for victories throughout the season's remainder. "Will it suffice for us to clinch wins for the rest of the season? I'm not convinced it will, though we've certainly made a positive move forward."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance levels to reliably contend with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 campaign.
Leclerc secured his second win of the year, leveraging a single pit stop strategy to outperform the McLaren pair of Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second visit to the pit lane, Leclerc trailed by five seconds, underscoring McLaren's speed superiority at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled a major update for the Italian Grand Prix, aimed at addressing their issues with bouncing.
Nonetheless, during the FIA press briefing following the Monza race, Leclerc has called on Ferrari "to proceed with caution."
"He emphasized the need for caution, explaining, 'Following Monaco, it feels like we've encountered our toughest challenges in the season, as Monaco's conditions uniquely suited our car then. Similarly, Monza presents its own unique and distinct challenges."
The track had numerous straight sections and few curves. Our victory today was aided by a specific rear wing we used for this circuit. Additionally, we introduced another enhancement that seemingly narrowed the gap with McLaren, yet I believe it's not sufficient to position us as the dominant car for the remaining season on different circuits.
"I believe there's still much to accomplish, yet I'm genuinely pleased to secure a win here in Italy."
Following a challenging period post-Monaco, Leclerc is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' standings, Ferrari trails Red Bull by a mere 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered anticipation, referencing previous discussions of a title contention after his victory in Monaco.
"Our performance this weekend has been impressive; however, the races in Baku and then in Singapore might present completely different challenges. Therefore, it's crucial for us to recalibrate. We managed to make a significant adjustment from Monaco to Montreal, demonstrating how much can change from one race weekend to the next."
"Following that, we endured three or four of the most challenging races of the season, as we were attempting to decipher the issues with our car. We're optimistic that moving forward, we won't have to face such difficult races again, and I believe that will indeed be the situation."
"However, it's crucial that not only the team members but also external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as that would be unrealistic."
"Have we made progress? Absolutely. Does this mean we're in a position to consistently win races for the rest of the season? I'm not convinced we're there yet, but we've certainly moved in the right direction."
