KTM’s Ultimatum: Augusto Fernandez Faced with Career-Defining Challenge in 2024 MotoGP Season
KTM: Augusto Fernandez was aware his career was on the line without strong results
KTM: "There's no need to dress it up. The situation was straightforward. If Augusto didn't achieve something remarkable in the early 2024 races, then his time was up."
KTM disclosed that before the start of the 2024 MotoGP season, Augusto Fernandez was informed about the tough truth regarding his career prospects.
Fernandez, similar to Jack Miller, will no longer be with KTM in 2025 and seems at risk of exiting MotoGP entirely.
Fernandez is believed to be considering offers from both WorldSBK and Moto2, although none appear to be from the top-tier category.
The Spanish competitor's decline in performance has persisted throughout the entire season, and with newcomer Pedro Acosta currently ranked fifth, Fernandez has been left without any cover.
In a conversation with GPOne, Pierer Mobility's board member Hubert Trunkenpolz acknowledged that Fernandez was aware of the challenges in retaining his position.
"Trunkenpolz made it evident prior to this season that Augusto needed to show considerable improvement for things to pan out for him in 2025."
"We don't have to gloss over the facts. It was obvious from the start. Augusto needed to produce something truly remarkable in the initial races of 2024, or his time was up. That's just the reality of the situation, and he was aware of it."
Pit Beirer similarly commented on Fernandez, indicating that the Austrian company anticipated facing some challenges.
Beirer stated: "Fundamentally, Augusto has achieved the title of Moto2 world champion, which is considered a significant accolade in the realm of this sport.
Everyone understood that Augusto might not have an equally explosive debut in the MotoGP world championship compared to Pedro Acosta.
“Securing a fourth-place finish at the 2023 Le Mans GP wasn’t handed to us on a silver platter. Naturally, we leveraged his achievements in Moto2 and placed our faith in him.”
