Jorge Martin Weighs In on Pecco Bagnaia-Alex Marquez Aragon MotoGP Collision as Championship Race Heats Up
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship contender Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency. Meanwhile, Francesco Bagnaia's mistake led to a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix events in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin continued his streak of second-place finishes, securing the runner-up spot in both races for the weekend. Martin has now finished second in all six races since the summer break ended.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a slow beginning, Bagnaia made his way up the ranks and reached Marquez's back tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on the situation, but the two collided and crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly support any particular side.
"It's tough," remarked Martin. "You ought to ask Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Absolutely, it's challenging to see as there was a significant amount of dust on that side. I believe that Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2, where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I hope they're alright since it looked like they ended up near the bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no bone fractures. However, the Italian rider did mention experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is set to take place this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have just one week to recover from Aragon before competing at Misano.
Despite Bagnaia having secured two victories in the MotoGP category at Misano, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This season, the Spanish rider brings a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads into his competitor's home event.
