Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash as Championship Battle Intensifies
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia’s crash negatively impacted his performance.
Martin reached Aragon five points behind Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint race and the Grand Prix in Austria.
Bagnaia had a rough weekend in terms of points, and Martin continued his streak with two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races he's placed second since the summer break.
Bagnaia's race weekend culminated in a late incident involving Alex Marquez. Despite a sluggish start, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez with seven laps remaining.
On the 18th lap, Marquez went off course at turn 12, and when Bagnaia attempted to capitalize, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was noticeably hesitant to strongly favor one side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez."
"Certainly, it’s challenging to view due to the significant amount of dust on that side. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 (Roberts crashed on the last lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez), and ultimately, there was a collision."
"I really hope they're alright because it looked like they were near their bikes after the crash. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race with a leg injury sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year, he'll have a one-week recovery period following the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP class, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard heads into his rival's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
