Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Crash Amidst Championship Battle at Aragon MotoGP
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances of winning the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following Bagnaia's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, and Martin experienced another weekend of securing two second-place finishes, making it the sixth consecutive race since the summer break where he has finished in second place.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated in a late-race collision with Alex Marquez. Despite a slow start, Bagnaia made his way through the pack and caught up to Marquez with just seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to seize the opportunity, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, but he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to question Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see due to the dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't lean further, similar to what occurred with Joe Roberts in Moto2 when he crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez. Ultimately, there was a collision."
"I really hope they're alright. After the accident, they appeared to be near the bikes, so I wish them a speedy recovery for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the next race in the MotoGP World Championship, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this event with a leg injury sustained from a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. Similarly, this year he will have only one week to recover from the Aragon race before competing at Misano.
Though Bagnaia has secured two victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who claimed victory in both 2023 races. This year, the Spaniard carries a 23-point lead in the championship as he heads into his competitor’s home event.
