Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Collision at Aragon MotoGP, Eyes Championship Lead Ahead of Misano
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the incident between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP race.
Jorge Martin's chances for the championship improved during the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend, thanks to his ongoing remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia suffered a crash.
Martin came to Aragon with a five-point deficit in the World Championship standings behind Bagnaia, who had won both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, while Martin secured two more second-place finishes, making it six consecutive races where he has finished in second place since the summer break.
Bagnaia's weekend culminated with a late-race collision involving Alex Marquez. Despite a rough beginning, Bagnaia was making his way up the ranks and caught up to Marquez's back wheel with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez veered off course at turn 12. As Bagnaia attempted to capitalize on this, they collided and both crashed at turn 13.
During the press conference after the race, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly favor any particular side.
"It's challenging," Martin stated. "You should inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
"Certainly, it was hard to see clearly due to the heavy dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn't tilt further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in the Moto2 race (where Roberts crashed on the final lap while competing with his American Racing teammate, Marcos Ramirez), which eventually led to a collision."
"I hope they’re alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the accident. I wish them well for the next race."
Following the incident, Bagnaia visited the medical center, where scans revealed no broken bones. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing pain in his neck and left shoulder.
The upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix, is scheduled for this weekend at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli. In 2023, Bagnaia competed in this race with a leg injury he sustained during a crash at the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he faces a similar situation, having only one week to recover after the Aragon race before taking on Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories in Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who clinched both wins in 2023. This year, the Spanish rider heads to his competitor's home circuit with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
